Not surprising, of course, what with t'internet and the like. Closing a couple of distribution centres apparently.
In the pipeline is an app and online videos of a complete stripdown. Good luck with that, there's eff all to strip on a modern car, it's all electronics.
-
"Undo retaining screws to - insert electronic component of your choice - and replace with a new item", doesn't really cut it anymore.
The automotive world has,for the most part, passed Haynes by. In the 70,s the exploded diagrams of every single part - engine, gearbox, diff, carb etc. were superb, but as you say, cars aint like that anymore. Even the parts which are largely the same, they just use a few photos to explain these days, which are nowhere near as useful imo.

I think that car mechanics has drifted away from DIY/Hobbyist, much more to getting garages to do it. Not sure if thats by necessity, or the way society has gone?

An old motor engineer, with 40 years in the trade, recently closed his workshop here. He made the local rag. Couldn't/wouldn't do computers and couldn't get by without.

no surprise.. keeping the garage equipment and other materials necessary for different models of same car even costs serious money..
and embedded electronic systems with varying software , hardware become very complicated.. those people must spend serious time and money for training :(

Most of that's perception, rather than reality, IMHO, but I guess that's little consolation. They could have done a better job of moving with the times, though. I've never seen the use of a code reader or a paperclip mentioned in their manuals, yet that still have pages on changing the big ends which last 250k without issues on a modern engine.
It's odd these days. Those with new cars seem more than happy to go to the stealers and get shafted. Those with 2nd hand cars moan that a service is "more than the car's worth" and drive unmaintained deathtraps until they go no more, then buy another. Gone is the keen amateur who'll have a go himself, apart from little circles like ours.

Very true.It used to be a great british tradition to work on your own car. Many driveways up and down the country had a mans head under an open bonnet on any dry sunday. These days most people put fuel in the tank and pay the local eastern Europeans a few quid to wash it while they are in Tescos.

I was surprised to see this as I'm sure I saw in the news recently that Haynes were buying a similar business in the US. I've had a quick look but can't find the article now. :-\

Folk have more money these days than in years gone by
Why do it yourself when you can get a muppet to do it
So you can go to Tescos and have a coffee and be lazy about it.

so far the best use i've seen for a modern Haynes book, was mark and TB using it to stand on to be able to reach in to the engine bay a little further.
the books are otherwise useless these days, not because of a lack of written information, but because they're printed on such thin rubbish paper, you can read both pages from both sides of the sheet, but can;t actually distinguish anything in any of the photographs.
(having relatively recently bought an astra manual , i am sorry to say i'm not actually joking..... )

Definition of Static :- still saving up for the Transit tipper to pull it. ;D

I have a neighbour who has a new motor every two or three years or so, claims he has never lifted a bonnet, never set the trip computer, does not know how to, it need not be there as far as he's concerned. Just takes it into the stealers when they send him a reminder. He must have topped up his windscreen wash bottle at some time, although I've never seen him do it.
Wish I was rich. :'( :'( Surely something will go phut at some time.

Handy as it was there were better ways to do some of the dismantling that was less time consuming than the haynes way
-
Lets face it, cars are now heading towards sealed engine compartments, with electric motors, where only the computer, not the greasy tool totting mechanic, will be welcome.
I was lucky by having a highly qualified mechanic as an uncle who gave me good training that, along with car mechanics evening classes, gave me all the basic knowledge I needed as a youngster to keep my car going. The Haynes manual gave me added useful info pertaining to my cars. But cars were simple then, with no electronics to talk of. Now, as I said, you need a computer, plus a degree in electronics :o :o :o :D :D ;)
-
You still need spannering ability to identify, locate, extract and refit said boxes of electrickery though ::)
And the mechanicals are all largely unchanged in their principles of operation :y some things have also been developed to oblivion. For example, my first car was a 2.3 Cologne V6 Granada. Service intervals were 6k and included adjusting the valve rockers every 6k. Current Omega has 10k oil changes and self adjusting hydraulic valve lifters, so not only twice the service interval, but also less than half the work every time...

Thats funny, I have just bought an Astra mk5 book and thought it was more reasonable than the old ones. Paper is thicker and wiring diagrams a lot clearer if not quite as comprehensive as before. I wonder if you got an old stock one or something.

Yep.Men don't work on the car on a Sunday now. They have progressed to cooking Sunday lunch. ::)
I work on my car in sundays.. but mostly polishing/cleaning/washing ;D
back street garages are very cheap here.. main problem is parts are expensive not labour.. :-\
besides I define the mechanics how the job must be done, making them angry ;D
but they have the experience that in cases they cant solve I do help ::) ;D
-
and for haynes..
some pictures are helpful.. but explanations are inadequate for many cases.. TIS/EPC is more helpful imo..
-
I find the biggest issue with EPCs is they often move parts out of context to fit the page ::)

I dont see anyone around here doing diy jobs on cars :( Just me . It use to be every sunday folks would bring the spanners out . Most cars are old ish around here and as soon as they get trouble with them they just scrap and get another cheap car . Servicing dont happen , just run them into the ground and cube it :'(
