Well at long last we are sending a decent effort to help contain Ebola in Africa. Here is hoping it isn't too late.
Anyone else feel that Western countries don't really seem geared up to the threat?
How long before some militant gets the idea that they could become a suicide carrier/donor? I bet that was also discussed at today's Cobra mtg.

I think if it grows and becomes a full blown pandemic the human race is going to shrink an awful lot..

No, and it is a fact that it is overdue :'( :'(
Nature culls by way of war and plague and since WW2 we have not had a massive loss of human life. In fact in the 21st century we have suffered little, thank God, but the twentieth century started like that. Then there was the Great War that cost 10 million lives; the flue pandemic of 1918 killed 18 million, then WW2 took away 56 million. To control our rising to 7 billion World population something will happen.
Just pray to your God that it does not effect you or your family :( :(

Yep, the Food, Water, Oil, Gas & Coal will be available for longer for the survivors, never mind the reduction in climate change
Now there's a conspiracy for you ::) ::) :-X ;)

Miss Vamps has the solution, to save the uk at least, she feels we should simply close the boarders, no one in and no one out.......... ;) ;)

Sounds a good idea but the Uk would grind to a halt and plunge into a deep recession.

If the out break is as bad as the Black Death of 1348 and it's final sting in 1370, recession will be the last of our problems. :(
In fact a total lock down around the UK / West Africa could be an answer. Everything necessary may have to be done to protect us here; "by any means" comes to mind, especially when it comes to illegal and legal visitors from Africa. But hopefully we will never get to that point. Heaven help us if we have to!!

I wish they'd change the name of it. Sounds like a football player name ;D

My idea is that if you are travelling from or have been too a known ebola infected area, before even getting on the flight or ferry you need to show certified isolation for 21 days and a recent clear test for ebola (that now includes the US and Spain :o :o)
That would sort the "wheat from the chaff"
With today's technology you dont have to be here to conduct business
-
Waited far far far too long to deal with this.
Only now they are sending a Hospital ship to the region. While the virus itself knocks on the door, trying to get in.
This started in February.

and in Spain there are protest over a potential dog ebola carrier being put down, WTF >:( >:(

Agree with you Chris
We should have resticted travel too and from the infected parts 6 months ago along with temperature / heath checks at the point of entry and 'dangle berries' to the queues.
I agree that its a fine line between vigalance and over reaction but imo, it about time some nations grew a pair of gonads :(

The site canteen was talking about how to control world population and also deal with this new plague.
Nuke Africa..wipes out the ebola and saves the millions suffering from No water and No food (doesn't stop them breeding like rabbits mind..?) and would save the millions of pounds spent on the begging adverts on TV.
I did think it was a bit harsh...but having thought on it..... :-X

Ah, yes the Machiavellian solution. I touched on that approach myself in my post above. However, are we Christian, caring for humanity, the weak and the poor included, or do we become pure realists, or there again Nazi's? And before any goes for me, and I am just speaking out aloud and raising that big question for all of us. How far do we go to protect our own? Do we have to make that "hot air balloon decision" of who jumps to save the rest, or do we just let nature and the will of God do it's thing?
No easy answers, and perhaps together we are strong divided we are weak, so better to tackle this together with the rest of the international community but quickly before it is too late!
We certainly do not want to get to the stage of calling "bring out your dead"............and then realising no one is alive to bring them out! ::) ::) :-X

Breeding like rabbits is a defence mechanism, not for the hell of it...
As sanitation improves, infant life mortality rates improve which in turn needs a change of behaviour...
This is why your grand parents and their parents were from large families, and why now most people only have one or two kids instead of seven or eight.
-
Also next time you're in Asda or Tescos, have a look and see where your food actually comes from...
Africa produces enough food to export it to us :-X

That is exactly right, with that pattern spreading out across the world as wealth, along with health improves.
The problem is nature needs to cull us every so often and as we do not know everything about human health and the threats to it, with antibiotics declining in power, we humans may have become too confident/arrogant too soon and misjudged the cut back on off spring numbers. I think we shall find out the truth one day :P

There's a lot of "we's" in there, Lizzie. Speak for yourself. Politicians have for years been saying "we" when referring to the general population, when actually "we" don't agree with with them at all. Us racist, homophobic woman haters can speak for ourselves, thank you. :P

No, I speak in terms of our society, not I but we, together, as a family of humans. That was the point of my post, to raise those questions of ourselves. Whatever we do together is what is important, because certainly I have little power to change things one way or another, not that I am that sure of what we should do together let alone me personally.
We, all of us, need to listen to those medically trained to arrive at any possible answer. Only then can we as a society start to make decisions.
If you push me for a personal, political, outlook on this I would say that it is unquestionable in nature that the strongest survive, but out of the strong comes the weak which must be protected if I am to consider myself a Christian, let alone a human being.
"Racist, homophobic woman haters" have no place in my world and should never be tolerated, but pitied as weak spirits of the human species. :-X

Sorry but don't agree...its child abuse pure and simple.
These people are dying due to lack of food and water...yet they knowingly bring children into this world who they know will either die very young or at very best suffer.
Why should I feel sorry for someone in an African country, yet we would all be up in arms if it happens here.
It will end up here and then its simply to late...we need to wake up and start tackling these issues head on and I don't mean governments simply discussing sending Aid or Ships when its obviously to late.
If the hospitals cant pick up on SARS (I came back from Singapoore/Phillipines and had Pneumonia supposedly) at the height of it...then what chance do they have of spotting and shutting down the spread of it.
-
Slightly off topic I know but a question for Lizzie and our
devil dodging god fearing members.
On the subject of birth control in Africa
Wasn't it the catholic church that encouraged its missionaries in Africa to tell the locals that condoms gave you AIDS so that they breed and boost their following ?
-
I think the Government don't consider Ebola to be serious as it isn't an airborne virus like the flu. It's more like AIDS I guess.
I watched that movie 'Outbreak' so I feel like an expert. ;D

Yes, and the Catholic church still frowns upon birth control in Ireland and any where else their brethren exist! It also assisted, or at least turned a blind eye to what the Nazi's were doing with the Jews.
I am definitely not a Catholic, and would never be, but a Christian who does not believe in organised religion, like even the C of E. All organised religions is politically motivated and self centred, and for me does not preach or follow the true and pure teachings of Jesus Christ.
Those religions are not to blame for the Ebola crisis though, no more than they are in this country when there is a flue epidemic! ::) ::) :P

Claiming child benefit puts you firmly in the same boat as those people who receive/accept foreign aid :-X

No, those people are dying of a lack of food and water because the rest of the world only looks after itself. If there was more will to put things right by the West instead of just arming political regimes then the situation could be very different.
They often bring children into this world through ignorance and poor education, but also with hope for the future, just as was the case not that long ago in Britain. They should be helped to come into the new age not be left stranded in a medieval existence that is also prevalent in other areas of the world.
The rich element of the world has the resource to rectify the situation, but decides instead to bury their heads in the sand and not make the political decisions required. Then the world wonders why we have a health crisis like Ebola! ::) ::) ::) :-X

True story this but about 6 years ago, I got the worse dose of proper flue I ever had OFF A BLOODY VICER who I was working for so that last statement is definitely wrong :P ;D ;D

Much of the breeding like rabbits in African countries is the result of thoughtless, drunken sex. ::) So not much different to here really, apart from having no welfare state to pick up the pieces when the father walks away. :(
Anyway back to Ebola!
An Australian nurse has been hospitalised in Cairns after alerting the authorities that she had Ebola like symptoms after returning home from Sierra Leone and a British man has reportedly died in Macedonia after suffering similar symptoms to Ebola. :o :(
I was listening to Jeremy Whine today and they were talking to a woman who had travelled here from Sierra Leone where there are travel restrictions in place preventing people moving around the country. So she couldn't travel to Freetown (the capital) but because there is an airport in her province, she could fly out and on to Britain. :o ::)
Although the government have 'U-turned' today and will introduce screening at Heathrow, Gatwick and the Eurostar terminal for people travelling from affected countries. :) So we'll be just fine! ::) :)

Sorry Lizzie .. but I must disagree with you, Africa is one of the richest countries in the world for raw materials, and has more than sufficient to be far more than self sufficient in everything.
Unfortunately it also has 2 other things .. tribes and corruption.
These ensure that everyone ends up at the lowest possible point .. never let another tribe get better than you .. except for the corrupt leaders who "feather their own nests" for their own - mostly tribal - ends.
Just look at the history of Rhodesia, a prosperous, well fed, well housed mostly farming country, often called the "bread basket of Africa" and compare that to Zimbabwe, a poor, war torn, and lawless country now called the "basket case of Africa".
and I won't mention some the atrocities that tribal wars have caused .... Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda and numerous others
Aids/HIV originated in Kinshasa, Ebola originated in Zaire ...
An awful lot of "self inflicted injuries" in that list ..... so lets not blame the West for all their woes .. even though it is fashionable in left wing circles so to do
Interesting reading ... http://www.drtomoconnor.com/3160/3160lect04.htm

Africa is a continent comprised of 53 countries and not a country itself. ::) The countries are as different and diverse as our own European countries. :y
Kinshasa is the capital of The Democratic Republic of the Congo, which used to be called Zaire. ;)
A bit pedantic maybe, but lets get things right! :D :y

Don't be sorry Entwood as you are right, and in fact you are agreeing with me, but you don't know it! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
When I was outlining the problem with Africa I stated:
"No, those people are dying of a lack of food and water because the rest of the world only looks after itself. If there was more will to put things right by the West instead of just arming political regimes then the situation could be very different.
They often bring children into this world through ignorance and poor education, but also with hope for the future, just as was the case not that long ago in Britain. They should be helped to come into the new age not be left stranded in a medieval existence that is also prevalent in other areas of the world."
That is I was saying the rest of the World has a responsibility to politically force those who are responsible for the corruption and the stripping of assets from the people of Africa to cease their activities. The strong countries of the world, instead of looking away and only being interested in what we can get out of Africa in minerals or selling them arms (the British Empire did all that!), should get tough as we would with a oil rich state. The United Nations could place administration systems in place to ensure in the poorest states of Africa water and food is readily available to all, instead of leaving it to charities to do just some of that. The western countries in particular can find the means to go in with military might and spend billions when it politically suits them so why not give Africa that support and rid it of it's corrupt, and yes tribal, system? What is lacking is will, and the sceptic within me wonders why! ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
Ebola could well be the sting in the tail for the west, a wake up call, after decades of not facing up to the very human problems and tragedies found in Africa, a continent the homo Sapiens arose from. It is time for the world to work together to resolve it's issues that will affect all of us on this increasingly small planet. ;)

Using that argument why should I/we/us pay taxes which are used to pay child support prop up the NHS/Welfare State?
For example, if I said to you that I thought that everyone north of Watford was a sub species of creature and therefore not worthy of water, electricity, food or medical aid, let alone cash, then I suspect you would all kick off.
I don't agree with the welfare state (at least the way that it is abused by those with an air of entitlement), but that doesn't stop me from paying my tax and national insurance. This is simply being socially responsible. As a responsible, civilised nation we have a duty of care, not only for ourselves, but to everyone/thing else on the planet... Foreign aid is a small price to pay for being a wealthy, developed country, and without charities, foreign aid spending would be far, far higher.
And before I get accused of being a wishy washy peace loving liberal vegetablist, I sniff petrol, eat raw meat and drink beer as often as any other redneck male.
Apologies for going off on one, but it does grate somewhat.

Spanish Tv yesterday morning. I was shocked when they interviewed the head of health in Madrid. They asked him about the doctor who claimed that the Ebola protection suit was too short for him and that he had skin exposed when he treated the patient.
"Yes, it's possible. The doctor is much taller than the average Spaniard - nearly 2 m - and our standard suit might not fit him."
Crikey on so many levels. :o :o

Actually Doesnt play well...id suggest you pay your taxes as you have no choice in the matter, very much like the rest of us.

I agree with everything you have said above; I could not have put it better myself! :y :y :y :y :y
We are all in a Social Contract. I could opt out of that contract, exercising my freedom to do so. But then I opt out of NHS care; Police response and protection; an electric light in the street outside my home: a state pension; a road I can use to get to the shops, etc, etc. I have to take the rough with the smooth and accept that, whilst voting for the changes I want. Taking away help to the weak of this world is not an option, as one day I may need that help! ;) With Ebola we all have a responsibility to fight it or perhaps say good bye to everything we know.

The people who receive aid don't expect or demand it... unlike those who claim for every last penny here.

But that's my point...why do these poor countries insist on doing so...id love 10 kids,i know that we couldn't afford it,so we have stopped with just the twins.
Ebola will effect us soon enough...and we should be looking out for ourselves,do we really need to support places like India and the African countries, seeing as they have money to send rockets into space and the latter has had billions donated and the situation hasn't changed has it.
We need to be selfish and look after our own and then once were all on a level with each other, only then we should be looking at helping others with what we have spare.

The only thing that separates Man from Bacteria is humanity, (and opposing thumbs)...
Turning our backs on those less fortunate serves only to undermine everything which makes us human.
As and when Ebola arrives, we have the medicines and resources to deal with it. Sure some will die, and some won't be affected by it, but we will on the whole get by.

Really...id say its more damaging to allow them to continue (in the case of the starving countries who continually need support) sending Aid.
Who are we doing it for..them or us. :-X

Actually Doesnt play well...id suggest you pay your taxes as you have no choice in the matter, very much like the rest of us.
The uk tax payer pays into a pot...they take the help when needed (have you claimed...it aint easy),unlike others in the world who expect millions if not billions yet the situation never gets better.
Oh and im well aware of big families....my wife is filipino after all.
I have no intention of claiming for anything, especially not children, as I won't consider having any until I can afford to do so :-X
The people who receive aid don't expect or demand it... unlike those who claim for every last penny here.

Without education and birth control(s) it is human nature to reproduce. Apart from what else "fun" is there to do when you are dirt poor, it actually makes sense to have a large family. With mortality rates being high compared to Western countries( with healthcare so good we are all going to live forever) you need to keep reproducing to make sure some get to adulthood and can then look after you if you make older age. The trick is the transition from one to the other. This is one area that "aid" works on. The Chinese managed it. In fact they managed it rather too well making Europe look profilate.

Yes agree with you about education...but would you not agree 20/30/yrs of education and millions of £££ being thrown at them has made no difference and that's merely in my life time and im only 41yrs old. :o
As for birth control..thats why God gave us Bottoms or the withdraw method (works for porn stars ;D).
Appreciate how a large family works...but these people simply don't have the resources to keep having kids, yes its not fair, but life isn't fair.
I don't know why they have to starve in African countries when half of Eastern Europe is empty...maybe the Aid we send could simply buy plane tickets and world starvation sorted...Christ im a genius. ;D

Breeding like rabbits is a defence mechanism, not for the hell of it...
As sanitation improves, infant life mortality rates improve which in turn needs a change of behaviour...
This is why your grand parents and their parents were from large families, and why now most people only have one or two kids instead of seven or eight.
Sorry but don't agree...its child abuse pure and simple.
These people are dying due to lack of food and water...yet they knowingly bring children into this world who they know will either die very young or at very best suffer.
So how much have you sent....me ive sent nothing as i dont see them as a worthy cause, blunt but just honest
Why try and help those you dont help themselves...same as this ebola business, look after no.1.
I bet you wear socks with your sandals don't you................ :D :D

I've seen a few conspiracy theories about ebola starting to do the rounds suggesting that it's all a massive con and ebola dosn't exist. ::)
Now I don't believe that for a moment, but one thing that has struck me a little strange is that it hasn't spread beyond Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea in the neighbouring countries or other African countries. :-\ There is a lot of trade and travel going on across the continent as believe it or not they're not all living in mud huts and you'd think that the odd case might have cropped up in places like South Africa or Kenya. :-\
Think of all the Indians and Chinese travelling around yet we havn't heard of a case of ebola cropping up in Mumbai or Shanghai? The only cases outside of West Africa have been in Europe and the US. ::) Strange? ??? :-\
