Friend Ali enquired zbout changing a clutch on a Vauxhall Signum. Said he had been quoted £1000, should he scrap the car? Is the Signum FWD? Is the clutch change a big job?

It is indeed. And when you put 250 BHP and the thick end of 300 ft lb of torque through the front wheels you know about it.
My car is an auto. :)

Unless you refer to the Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy I have no idea what your deranged northern mind is thinking. ;)
42 is the answer to everything and can fully explain the episode of Horizon last night.

250bhp is your number which, apparently, is a number I shouldn't concern myself with. My number is 42.....mpg, which you will never have to concern yourself with. :)

I wouldn't have guessed 42 MPG in a million years.
42 BHP yes........but not 42 MPG. :)

Thank you all for advice. Sub frame off job, eh? I know some FWD drive cars with transverse engines allow easy clutch changing, apparently not the Signum. I understand that the lady has got a quote of £700 from another garage and accepted it.

That sounds a lot of money to keep a Signum on the road. How old is the car?
Which petrol engine does it use?

Vauxhall had the perfect system with an inspection plate and "cassette" type clutch change. You could change it in around 30 minutes :y Unfortunately they shelved that a long time ago ::)

Because 30 minutes labour a time would never pay for the fancy premises, receptionists, tea, coffee etc.. </cynical>

The reason the drop out clutch was stopped was down to Brussels. To meet the new emission laws back in the early nineties the engines were leaned off and to keep the inertia the flywheel needed to be heavier and as they could not make the diameter bigger they had to make it thicker with a pot style clutch, reason for the pot style is GM were using old style gear boxes on new style engines
Cheers
Andy

I had 2 dmfs and clutches under warranty on my old Signum 1 9cdti. If you go on the Vectra / Signum forum there are a lot of threads - recall there was a guy doing clutch swaps reasonably priced

Car is a 2005 model, engine size unknown. Owner has just put on new tyres so claims she cannot afford to scrap it. The price includes a new flywheel (DMF?), clutch slave cylinder and thrust bearing. I think this is good many after bad, but it's her choice.

As a comparison I just got two quotes today for a water pump change on my Smart Roadster.
A new water pump is about £90 to buy .......
MB quoted me £330 ...... 1.8 hrs + £30 for antifreeze ??? and another £11 for the 'fan belt'
The Merc/Smart Independent phoned me and before he told me his quote I told him what he had to beat ........ he told me to go to MB because though he knew that MB would quote for nearly two hours labour, he reckoned it couldn't be done in that time and his quote was 'double that' of MB :o :o :o
I've removed the water pump with the engine in-situ (the book says the engine needs to be dropped) ..... I'm collecting the new one tomorrow.
