Hi,
Can anyone help me ID my engine?
When I bought the car, I thought it was a 3.2l (I know I should've checked the log book)
On doing so, after I got home, it says 3.0l. The boot says 3.2 too...
The plenum looks like the one fitted to the 2.6/3.2 (long) but it's not fly-by-wire and it has 1 coil pack.
The car is Ex-police and I'm sure they do all sorts but What do I have????
How can I ID my engine?
-
Guessing your car is 2001 or older and a 3.0... As standard the 3.2 was DBW so unless someone has been messing seriously it's a 3.0 that someone decided to stick 3.2 badges on

It's not a 3.2 then

Also long plenums were fitted to 3.0 from 1998 onwards :)

If you jack the car up on the drivers side, using a torch look at the side of the engine. It will have either 3.0 or 3.2 stamped on the block.
On the Top Inside edge of the heads is always stamped what engine it is too. just incase your not convinced..
Like already said though 2.6 & 3.2 are dbw.
-
ehhhh.......does it not say on the log book or have I missed something here?

It says OXO on buses but they don't sell it :)
-
Engines can be changed....log book should be accurate on leaving the factory, but that was a long time ago.
-
Engines can be changed.... ....
but would you go to the effort of swapping DBW for a cable and coil packs for DIS etc etc? ::) ;) ;)

yes, if your engine blew up and thats all you could cheaply / easily get.

.. but I wouldn't convert DBW to cable or vice versa. Just swap block and heads... and perhaps the numbers on the boot, in this case.
-
anyway...pm me the reg and ill tell you what it left the factory with :y

Not convinced you can as you would need the DBW ecu which is expecting can interfaces to the ABS an auto box (if fitted)

The OP was wondering what engine he had? It says 3.2 on the boot and yet the plenum is not drive by wire.
This would lead you to think it would be a 3.0 or even a 2.5.
I know someone who paid a lot of money for a 3.0 engine & gearbox to be fitted to his car, to have me breaking the news it was a 2.5 did not make him a happy bunny.
There is however a stamp on the drivers side of the engine block about an inch high, which will tell you what the bloke is. There are also stamps on the heads to prove too.
Engines can be changed, and perhaps everyone does not notify DVLA either.
-
I reckon it has had a new boot lid.
Engine. As Daz will mention he has had a 3.0 with full DBW gubbins, and the alternative is as possible.
Could be 3.0 as standard, 3.2 on 3.0 inlet, 2.5 or 2.6 on 3.0 inlet.
-
Thanks for the pointer re: markings.
I'll check when I get a chance... Where are the markings on the heads?
-
And don't say "on the heads" ;D ;D ;D
-
Racking my brains, seem to recall near inlet, at front, but wait for someone to confirm before ripping off plenum...
-
This was a 3.0 from new, with a nice 3.9:1 LSD :D
-
This was a 3.0 from new, ......
Which was as expected due to the throttle cable & single DIS pack. Not worth the effort to convert the DBW
-
Thanks for the pointer re: markings.

the markings on the heads are front passenger side edge where the cam cover meets the head. Drivers side is at the opposite end. There is a small square area where there is a number made out of small dots.
You will need to remove the plenum and inlet manifold. Is easier than it sounds honestly. Have a look if the number on the passenger side of the block matches what it says on the heads then that should then satisfy what engine you have in. The engine number is a pain to find but will help you to find it if you want to check that too :)
-
Thanks guys esp' Jimbob....
Not too sure it's got an LSD though, I did have a look but there was not tag....
I'll have to lift the back end and give it a twist....
Thanks again guys!
:y :y :y :y :y

theres never anything visible 10 years on, spin test doesnt work on this type of LSD iirc. open it up, or test via driving I beleive are the only ways.
-
It could probably do with an oil change. ;)
-
What's the spin test?
-
What's the spin test?
on some LSDs if you lift both back wheels from the floor, turn one side by hand, the the other side spins the way. :y

That would be NON LSD if it spins the opposite way...
I could get a friend to hold one wheel while I turn the other...
-
Oh, I guess I've got a non lsd then judging by what happened when i adjusted my h/b a few week back. Thanks peeps

Ooops! That's what I meant ............. trying to watch the telly at the same time. ;D ;D
-
Lol...
Me too... Watching the Bathurst race..... :y
-
Just a thought, but to save the OP removing the manifold, isn't the engine code stamped on the block, on the passenger side, where it mates with the gearbox? Just rear of the oil filter / crank sensor.
I certainly have seen a few engine codes stamped here...

Still not been under the car yet but will have a look at the weekend, also have a look at the diff.... :y
-
I'm a happy bunny now after Daz put the right engine in the car and did a superb job as usual ;) :y

Right engine?
-
My arse can usually tell if it LSD, fair amount of right or left lock, boot it, feels totally different to non-LSD

Right engine?
Yeap, Nitro paid a garage somewhere in South Wales to fit a 3.0 engine & gearbox.
He came up here to have some work done on his car as the "Garage" could not guarentee to make it oil tight :o
I then found it was a 2.5 engine they had fitted for him :o >:(
-
the spin left-right test for LSD does not work on Omega B
-

TBH I've not driven another Omega as this is my first....
Surely, if you only lift one side, leave the car in neutral and try to turn the wheel that's in the air, IF it's a LSD I souldn't be able to turn it by hand very easy???
-
Ok, it's official!!! NO LSD, :'(
-
Ok, it's official!!! NO LSD, :'(
on what basis have you tested? by the way it handles, or removed the inspection plate?
-
Lifted one side of the car with it neutral and the handbrake off and I can turn the lifted wheel freely.
As I've already said, I've not driven another omega to compare it to....
-
the spin tests dont work on this type of diff - as stated earlier.
You can test with driving style, or by removing the inspection plate and physically checking :y
-
What type is it then? I didn't think there was an inspection plate, just the rear cover and I don't fancy taking the diff out... :-\
-
If you don`t fancy removing inspection plate, pop a driveshaft off, look in the hole in the diff, if you have one pin
it`s non-lsd, two pins forming a "X" = LSD
-
Possibly stupid question but...
I thought the part number stamped on the diff casing had a digit which indicated when a diff was LSD?

chances of the ID plate still being there are pretty slim

Lol... Yeah.... No plate! :D

I'd definitely suggest taking off the rear cover and having a look. If it says so on the build record then I'd guess it's still there.
put it this way - if it's really LSD then it'll definitely benefit from an oil change and if it's not then you can change the oil at little cost.
I've got loads of the additive, I'll lend you some on a "use of return" basis if you need

That's a very kind offer 2woody, I'll whip off the cover and check it out...
What oil and additive should I use either way?
-
Incidentally, what type of diff is fitted to the Omega? And, How does it work?
I am familiar with the clutch type as fitted to Fords such as Capri's, MK2 Escorts and so on.....
And I know a little about some "locker" diff's but that's about it....
I was fully expecting to be able to lift one wheel and with some effort, be able to turn it against the clutches?????
