General Car Chat / Long shot, Machine Mart VAT free code
« on: 17 November 2012, 15:00:14 »
Went to Costco today to buy the Arcan 3 ton jack but they only had the ally 2 ton one. Went to MM to get the Clark one and asked about the VAT free promotion. They are currently doing it but its invitation only and I haven't received one despite being on their system as a previous customer.

So does anyone have one they don't intend to use?

General Car Chat / New jack and torque wrench question
« on: 12 November 2012, 10:48:00 »
Bought a set of Melco axle stands from machine Mart over the weekend and tried to change the oil yesterday but the cheap Hilki trolley jack I have doesn't lift the car high enough. Searched OOF last night for recommendations but those are out of my budget. My budget is max £50

Also bought a torque wrench, mainly for wheel bolts as I have been over tightening them slightly. Tightened the bolts to 110nm which didn't seem tight at all so increased the torque to 140nm but wrench clicked without getting the bolt any tighter. It's my first time using one of these so would like to know what I might be doing wrong.

Omega General Help / aerial function on 3.2 elite
« on: 04 October 2012, 11:34:18 »
Am I right in thinking the aerial is for phone, base for satnav and radio reception is on the rear glass on a 3.2 saloon?

General Car Chat / Project Rust Removal
« on: 30 September 2012, 20:04:56 »
Started treating the rust on the lip of the arch today. This is what it looked like.

Used a nail brush to get rid most of the muck under the wheel arch and then using a wire brush on a drill cleaned up the arch lip. Then removed the loose paint and sanded down using 200 grit paper. After a lot of sanding this is what it looked like:

This is as far as I got today. I have a lot more sanding to do next week to get it down to bare metal.  :(  Epoxy is quite expensive so I might try this stuff http://www.bilthamber.com/deox-gel/ and then http://www.autopaintsbrighton.co.uk/stone-chip-gravi-guard-u-pol-aerosol-black-500ml-241-p.asp and not bother with painting.

Thoughts.

Omega General Help / How to remove gearbox gaitor
« on: 23 September 2012, 11:46:29 »
chrisgixer done this in seconds but didn't watch him so anyone else know?

Mr gear lever rattles and squeaks, particulary over bumps and rough ground so was thinking of spraying it with WD40. Would this be ok to do?

Mine is missing the outer rubber/plastic cover so ideally would prefer just that bit if anyone has one lying about, if not then the whole aerial is fine.

Thanks

General Car Chat / My turn (what tyre)
« on: 19 September 2012, 10:13:00 »
I need new rubber all round. Currently have a different branded tyre on each corner and one that is 8 years old  :-X. Wishbones and WIM will be done prior to tyre fitting. I'm looking at the likes of Goodyear F1 which for 17s cost £125 (cheapest I could find). For that money I could also buy Conti sport contact 3 or something a bit different Uniroyal Rainsport 2.

Anyone who run these, whats the dry/wet grip, braking, wear and noise like?

Thanks

General Car Chat / Are you happy with your Omega?
« on: 17 September 2012, 18:40:31 »

When I bought mine, it needed a few little things doing to get it to a stage I was happy with. Once these were done I was happy and felt car was 'complete' for a month then the original GM exhaust needing replacing which I replaced with a noisy Walker unit (without researching) and replaced brakes with squealy TC pads. I lived with all this for over a year and recently replaced everything that I was unhappy with and thought that would be it but now it needs wishbones, WIM setup, tyres and has started to rust. All this would cost around £600  :(

So I give up, keeping a second hand car tip top is not possible  >:(

What does yours need to be 'perfect'?

General Car Chat / WIM and tyres
« on: 17 September 2012, 18:21:20 »
I will need tyres in the near future and have been looking at WIM website and the tyres are quite expensive. For example Conti Sport Contact 3 supplied and fitted are £194 compared to £126 elsewhere. Has anyone bought tyres from them and is the service worth the extra?

PS: does the Omega require XL tyres?

Omega General Help / Gearbox woes
« on: 15 September 2012, 17:42:25 »
Noticed for a while but wanted to be sure.

Driving along at 20mph and lift the throttle, get a thumping sound. Car is 3.2. Software is version 8 and oil, although not checked, was last topped up in May and no signs of leaks.

I hate cars  >:(

General Car Chat / Well it was inevitable...
« on: 13 September 2012, 16:57:53 »
Rust  :-[  Its bubbled through the paint so it has advanced and just started to show on the bottom of arch (second pic)

Nearside

Offside isn't as bad yet

What is the solution? Would cleaning out the inside of wheelarch and applying kurust/waxoil work (or at least slow the process)?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / strange window problem
« on: 19 August 2012, 15:47:04 »
My rear passenger window will not close from drivers switch. It moves up but comes back down when it gets to within 2 inches of closing but closes fine with the switch on that door.

Any ideas of what the problem could be?
