Omega General Help / Vibration after long descent
« on: 21 August 2007, 13:59:34 »
I noticed when on hols in the Lakes that at the end of a long descent of the passes that I was getting vibration under braking,  presumably heat related as it went away quickly and I haven't noticed it before or after.  (Actually my previous Omega did the same thing, but never encountered it on any previous car).

Is this common?  Sign I need new pads maybe..?

Omega General Help / Scuttle Leak
« on: 18 August 2007, 08:49:15 »
When I bought my Elite and was checking fluids before driving home, I noticed that the drivers side cam cover was wet.   have now poured a jug of water down the windscreen and onto the scuttle and its pissing through the passenger side wiper spindle hole in the scuttle.

The seal here seems to be pretty poor.  There is a foam 'washer' around the spindle and underneath the scuttle - this just doesn't seal at all and to be honest I'm surprise it ever did.

The obvious solution is to put some silicon sealant around the scuttle/washer on refitting the scuttle, but obviously I need to be able to remove the scuttle in future so don't want to glue things up too much.

Any better solution?  Should these washers be replaced?

Cheers,

Ian

Omega General Help / sun bleached bumpers
« on: 03 August 2007, 16:58:23 »
My bumpers are now a faded grey colour from the car having spent its life outside.

I tried a spot of tcut which improved things a bit but not greatly.

Is there anything out there that can restore them and won't make a worse mess?

Omega General Help / Fuel rail connector
« on: 01 August 2007, 23:50:57 »
Silly little problem..

was trying to remove my fuel rail this evening but had problems to disconnect the electrical connector at the back.  As far as I can see it is attached  to (or part of?) a plastic bracket that clips on to the engine lifting point.  On the top of the same bracket there are a pair of smaller cables.   Try as I might in the gathering gloom I couldn't disconnect the connector from the plastic bracket.   The other half of the electrical connector came off no problem.

I don't remember this problem with my 2.5 (this is 3L).

In Ronnies pic here http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1181719948/0#0 (third one down)the plastic bracket doesn't appear at all.

So is the plastic bracket supposed to come out with the connector, and if so presumably the two other cables need removing from it?

I'm sure I'm being dim and hopefully all will become clear in the light of day,   but appreciate advice in the meantime from anyone familiar with this.

Cheers

Omega General Help / HBV
« on: 26 July 2007, 21:56:10 »
Just been looking for a how-to on HBV replacement on a V6...  No joy but found a few posts, some here and on the other place.

One says -'no need to remove anything, just a 15 minute job'.  Suspect he must have fingers like ET ;)

Another says - remove scuttle, trumpets, plenum etc.

Can anyone advise whats really needed to come off to do the job sensibly?

Cheers,

Ian

Omega General Help / My misfire
« on: 18 July 2007, 11:34:57 »
As previously reported my 2.0 is missing on no.1.

I have replaced plugs, leads and DIS pack,  there is a good spark to block but still no.1 is not firing.
Pulling off the lead at idle makes no difference on that cylinder.   Plug is wet (dries off so I assume fuel) and looking down through the plug hole looks wet too.   Idling is rough (due to 3 cylinders) and isn't pulling under load, but otherwise will rev up to redline.

Having replaced the whole HT side, I am stuck. (No EML on - is it still worth doing paperclip test?)

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Ian

Omega General Help / Where does this pipe go 2.0DOHC?
« on: 14 July 2007, 10:50:16 »
I just know this came up recently but can't find the thread. >:(

There is a white vacuum pipe that goes off the rear of the intake just below the throttle body.   This then goes around the back and from its length must connect somewhere in the area of the DIS pack.  But mine is not connected to anything.

Cant see how this would cause misfire on no.1 which is what took me to that area (removing DIS pack),  but I'd like to correct it before going to the trouble and cost of changing the dis unit.

Can someone with a 2.0 have a look please?

Cheers,

Ian

Omega General Help / Fuel Filter - quick question
« on: 09 July 2007, 22:29:26 »
After much swearing I managed to remove my fuel filter.  Any directional marking on it has long since gone but I assume the raised lip at one end should be the same on the new one.

The question is..

when the old one came off, as well as the famous clips there was a small black plastic collar and little yellow o-ring on each side, pushed up tight towards the filter on the pipe.
Looks like part of the seal.  The replacement (GM) does not have these.

Do I ignore them or transfer them to the new filter?

Cheers

Omega General Help / DIS Pack?
« on: 08 July 2007, 13:18:32 »
I have now concluded that my 4 pot is not firing (properly) on cyclinder 1
- inspecting the plugs after a run, 2,3,4 all look fine grey/tan deposit as normal.  No 1 is damp.
- looking down plug hole, no 1 is distinctly wet (the others look dry)
- pulling no.1 lead does not affect the engine running (altough the lead does arc to the block).  2,3,4 upset it as expected.  So I conclude that no.1 is not firing anyway, hence no change.

I have new leads, and known good plugs (I swapped 1 and 2 just to confirm with same result above).

So its only the dis pack left on the HT side I think.

I have never touched the dis pack before on any Omega so would appreciate opinions.  Is it possible to inspect the dispack internally or is it a sealed unit as it looks?  (Its completely dry BTW,  although is probably original and 13 years/180k old).

My other theory is that no.1 injector is faulty/blocked (and that the dampness is oil residue that I was unable to clean out of the plug wells).  Feels unlikely though.

I know that oil in plug wells can see off the leads.  Can it also damage the dispack?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Ian

Omega General Help / 2.0 lumpy running cont.
« on: 07 July 2007, 11:27:38 »
Still trying to solve my lumpy running problems.

The plug wells are now dry,  new plugs and leads fitted.  Throttle body/breathers were only just cleaned recently (and ran fine afterwards).  No EML on.

Feels like it is missing/misfiring  - most noticable at warm idle (c 700rpm) - heavy vibration - and when under load running rough and not pulling well at all.

Is it DIS pack next?

Cheers,
Ian

Omega General Help / 2.0 DOHC lumpy running
« on: 23 June 2007, 14:31:40 »
My 2.0 has started running rough.

Symptons are
- does it all the time, hot or cold
- not pulling well.  Could be slightly better at high rpm but not convincing
- significant vibration at idle (7-800rpm), (and another resonance at 1500 most noticable when cold)
- no EML

Plugs are fairly new (<10k),  leads and dispack - who knows? probably original.
I removed plugs and the electrodes look good.
Airfilter fine and <10k
Fuel filter overdue  :-[ prob. 50k since last (Haynes says 40k replacement)

On investigation, plug wells are full of oil, so obviously need to replace the camcover seal again -previous one was Halfords before I was enlightened on here..
DIS pack looks bone dry. The car lives in a car port so I don't think water ingress is the issue.

I have cleaned out the plug wells and dried off the HT leads as best I can.  Problem remains.

Car is worth next to nothing ('94, 180k) so I don't really want to be throwing money at it at random.

I'm suspecting the HT leads are goosed, but I'd appreciate any suggestions.  I have a new fuel filter so prob most obvious to start with that.

Cheers,
Ian

Can anyone recommend a good carpet/upholstery cleaner and deodoriser?

I spilt some water some time ago and since then it has been honking something awful.

Omega General Help / V6 Thermostat
« on: 15 May 2007, 11:56:23 »
I'm about to buy one of these (I think several others on here have had them previously).
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200097035524&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:UK:1

The Ebay seller doesn't think I need replacement bolts (my engine number is 08300294 - its a 1998 2.5).
Could someone confirm please?  I'd rather not have the thing in pieces only to find I do need them.

I believe I need some sealant too.  Is the cam cover 'black stuff' ok or should I source something else?

Any other seals etc needed? (I understand the stat comes with its own o-ring seal)

Cheers,

Ian
