Omega General Help / Re: Whats wrong with it ???
« on: 15 May 2009, 19:02:00 »
So I know its been a while since the original post with this problem but finally got round to starting fixing things.

I desided the first thing to do was the crank sensor, since at least I would be able to start the car.

Having replaced it with the correct one, biggest hassel was finding the right cable, job its self it easy as. However, now the engine turns, which is an improvment on before but doesn't run. Initally I presumed this is cos I was jumping it with a metro so would be a lack of power, but having tried my mates 2.0 honda something the problem continues. The oil leak has left some oil sitting in the plug wells dispite my best efforts to clear them completly (intending to do this along with new plugs when changing the cam gaskets), would this effect the leads getting the spark to the plugs or is this going to be a fuel issue.

Basically I don't want to spend a few hundred on parts before knowing that the engine turns. so any advice on how to figure out what the issue is stopping the engine running would be a massive help and would be massivly appretiated.

You can just pull the washer pump out, take off the grill, only 3 screws, it's the small one ;)

thank god - i have put that off for months cos of it being a scary job.
And I take it the big one is for the headlight washers ?

OK done the paperclip, got back 19 - Incorrect RPM Signal.

is that just cos the engine wasn't on or was that the fault when it was cutting out ?

19 = Get a new crank sensor fitted asap or be prepared to walk home. (current wisdom is to only use genuine vx sensor, ebay ones seem unreliable)

I get code 19 with mine with engine off but was told its because of that. Engine off???

Went to try with the engine running - but battery is to flat to start it (left sitting for to long)

Ketho, where abouts in Edinburgh are you I have some experience of these things give me a PM and we can arrange to meet up for a look

dropped you a PM.

I forgot to add at the start that my window washers don't work. Is there a general fault that happens with these ? I think it might be the pump (there is 2 as one is the headlight washers but only 1 makes a noise. but no water comes out of either.) I had planned to sort this but reading haynes it seems like the whole front of the car needs to come off. So any advice before I try that would be great.

Howdoo and welcome.

Oil is probably a cam cover gasket.  Not the hardest or most expensive job, but needs confirmation.

Water leak could be a hose but probably the heater bypass valve.  Again, needs confirmation.

Car cutting out could be linked to the cam cover gaskets allowing oil into the plug leads....

Bottom line - please update your profile with car. location, etc and quite possible someone could look it over for you and give a fai assessment of whats wrong then we can take it from there...

 :y

Cheers to all for the advice, this seems to be the general concensis on whats probably wrong. Going to paperclip it today, I'll post the result up (whats the best way to upload a video so I can show you all the result ?

Question, when you say needs confirming. If I take pictures of where the leaks are coming from would that help ?

There is a little list of things wrong with my car and its out of MOT, I'll list the ones I'm stuck with here and if you can give any help it would be brillant and save me from continuing a life of bangernomicts.

From the day I bought the car its had a bit of an oil leak, wasn't much so didn't stress about it.

About a month ago it started leaking something, had a check and the expansion tank for the coolant was dry, so I started topping that up as well.

Then in the run up to xams and the end of the MOT (26th dec) my car developed a problem where the engine cuts out when reved above 2500 revs.

I've got no idea whats wrong with it and have almost no experince fixing cars (biggest job I've ever done was changing the front disks on this car). But I don't want to buy another guff cheap car and if I can't fix this thats what it will be.

Have you tried the door handle after turning the key (hard).  I know it sounds obvious but I forgot!

When this reply was the first one I thought "yep, should have seen that coming, very funny"

Reading over this after having tried to crawl under the car and failing to do so. I was about to cut the top off a roller and thought 'balls to it, try the key just one more time'.

Turned the key HARD, big clunk and what I thought was a broker key turned out to be an unlocked door....SWEEET

Cheers for the help all, I'll probibly be back for more once I start buying the bits I need.

Oh and Chris_H, sorry for not listening in the first place (unless you were actually taking the pi$$)

Did you dead lock the car before the battery went flat? If not keep trying the key in the door lock and keep turning it, yes it will be stiff but it will go eventually even though you might think the key will break. On the other hand if you are with a breakdown company like the AA ring them and tell them you ar locked out of the car and they WILL get in for you and pop the bonnet.

Paul :y

Is the dead lock when you press the lock button on the remote twice, if so then yeah I probibly did.
I'm not a member of the AA or anything like that.

First thing I tried.....lol

Bit of WD40 in the lock and jiggle backwards and forwards(the key- not YOU) then turn key to open. Might feel really stiff, but will go eventually! :y :y

I've tried that but the key turns no problem (about a quater turn) but doesn't unlock and i think the boot is a different key that I don't have  :(

Jack up the front nearside  corner and carefully connect a pair of jump leads to the starter postive connection and a good earth (zero volts for those who play with electrickery on a day to day basis ;))
Where is the "starter positive postion connection" ?
Also can this be done without jacking it up, my trolly jack is in the car....doh!

Not been on here much since registering as work (and then money) dried up for me to fix my car. http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1231020751/15#15 for the original post I'm still going to fix it but not for mayby another month or two.

I went to get some stuff out the car last week and now I can't get in it !

The battery has gone flat cos I was too lazy to keep it charged and now I find out that my key doesn't open the drivers door or the boot (its an estate). I can see the lock moving when I turn the key in the drivers door but it only moves a little and doesn't unlock. The boot lock doesn't turn at all.

I'm hopeing this just needs me to get the bonet open, somehow, and charge the battery for the key or fob to work. I'm not holding to much faith in the fob after a flat battery tho.

Any help with how I get in to my car would be amazing.

cheers

Hello

I suppose I should start with a hello and then tell you I'm currently  subcribing to the bangernomicts school of thought. Its kept me on the road for over 2 years for less than a grand. Last time the bucket I was driving got to the end of its MOT I got shot of it and landed myself an Omega. I had no idea what I had just bought, the drive home left me with a massive smile on my face.

Anyway I have a manual '95 3.0 elite estate with 112k on the clock. Inside the car, its in really good nick. I know little about engines but seemed to leak a little oil but everything else seemed to be fine. Small bits of rust on the outside but nothing major. It did need 4 new tyres (£30 each) and new front pads and disks, bought on ebay for less than £100 after a scary month of driving.  I have had it for 7 months with no new problems. But in the run up to crimbo (MOT ran out on the 26th) it developed a coolant leak. I kept that and the oil topped up. then a couple days before xmas the engine cuts out if I rev it over 2500. Safe to say that wiped the smile clean off my face.

So now its MOT is out and I've SORNed the lad and have probibly the biggest engine, most fun, bast car I've ever owned. The way I've been doing things for the last couple years says I should not spares and repairs the car or scrap it. But I find myself thinking 'mayby I can fix it'. Haynes manual out and a few days later I am no closer to knowing why its not reving above 2500.

From reading the forums I figure the oil leak is probibly the head gasket since there is pools of oil in the bit with the spark plugs.
The coolant leak is coming from the back of the engine, I hope thats coming from a split pipe.

There is a couple other things wrong with it but I've looked at haynes and think I can handle it.

Anyway if you can help save me from bangernomics click this link and post there, If not hello to you anyway.
