Omega General Help / Brake Pipe replacement
« on: 15 March 2011, 11:41:07 »
Hi there,

I think I will be needing to replace one or more of the brake pipes that run from front to rear on my Omega. Is this one of those jobs where you end up having to take off loads of other bits in order to gain access, or a relatively straightforward job? Any guidance/advice on time required and task complexity would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Mark S.

Sure - I take the point. However they were from a low mileage car, so I thought as long as they seemed sound they would be Ok, especially as they don't have any springs etc in them. Looks like one is not that clever anyway, so that won't be much good. I think my next course of action is to contact the guy that sold them to me.

The parts are used - I think I need to contact the guy that sold them to me and see whether he has a solution.

I am based in Telford.

Thanks for the help so far. It at least makes me feel better.

The ones that were on the car were definitely genuine GM  and the correct spec. The ones I have bought look the same but no rubber bushes at the bottom. I just thought I'd buy new ones from VX - but they don't supply the bushes seperately. Maybe they do for other shocks, and perhaps they would fit?

Looks like I might need to get back to the guy that sold them to me.

At the moment I am defintely stuck.

Just phoned Vauxhall and was told that the bush is part of the shocker and is not supplied seperately. Now that is a major problem as the shocks I have bought don't have bushes at the bottom. Oh dear me!!  :'(

Folks,

In the process of replacing a leaking damper on my Elite Estate. Followed the excellent instructions in the maintenance section :) But could I get the bottom of the shock off the pivot - No way :( In the end took an angle grinder to it and cut the damper off. The ruber bush seems to bonded on to the pivot at the bottom, so I have had to cut this off with a knife in order to be able to get a new one on. Are they always this difficult to remove and is the rubber bush bonded or glued on?

Any wisdom gratefully received!

Omega General Help / Front brake pad sensor - replace?
« on: 09 June 2010, 10:57:48 »
Hi all,

The brake pad sensor warning light on my 99 3.0 V6 has come on so I'll be replacing the pads shortly. Will the sensor be knackered or should I be able to re-use it? If I need a new one I'd like to get it at the same time as the pads.

Also - any recommendations for pads (front and rear). Vx or are there others which are good?

Many thanks,

Mark S.

Omega General Help / Re: Alarm goes off for no obvious reason
« on: 25 May 2010, 16:47:39 »
Thanks for these comments - I'll check out the suggestions. I must admit I thought it could be temperature related as it started with the recent very hot weather, but it went off again this morning and it was actually fairly cool.

Thanks again,

Mark S.

Omega General Help / Alarm goes off for no obvious reason
« on: 25 May 2010, 11:21:47 »
Folks,

The alarm on my Omega has started to go off for no apparent reason. Until now it's been fine for the year or so I have owned it. Are there any common reasons why it has started to misbehave? The car is a 99 auto elite 3.0 estate.

Thanks for any suggestions.

As a relatively new Omega owner I had similar issues with mine. I was convinced it was the DIS, but decided to do the cam cover gaskets and put new plugs in first. Doing the cam covers is a bit fiddly, but if you are methodical and don't rush it is not too difficult. Car now runs absolutely fine.
Endorse the comments about the exhaust (I need to do mine) - see if you can source a 2nd hand one, but for my 3.0 Estate I could get both the cats and the back box new for about £180 if I remember correctly. Looks to be not too difficult to fit - certainly easier than on my Volvo 960. I don't think your problems are as serious or as expensive as you might think!!

All the best,

Mark S.

Thanks for the suggestions folks - Curiously I was looking at BMW X3 or X5, they looked to be a possibility, but I'll check out the e39 advice as well.

Hi all,

Has anyone found out if headlamp washer jets from another vehicle will fit a pre-facelift Omega Elite? (There were some on Ebay for a Ford Focus that looked a possibility). New ones for the Omega are expensive to buy new and difficult to source 2nd hand. Maybe I should consider a different solution entirely? I am fed up buying replacements!

Many thanks for any input.

Omega General Help / Exhaust Question (3 litre Estate, 1999)
« on: 04 January 2010, 12:46:57 »
Hi all,

I noticed a bit more exhaust noise than usual the other day while parked on the drive, so looked underneath and one of the pipes from a central silencer is quite badly corroded and holed just before it goes in to the back box. Looks like the other one is also not going to last much longer, both the actual silencers are both in good condition (as is the back box). Is this a common place for the systems to go, and do I just accept I'll have to replace the two central silencers eventually? I have fixed it temporarily, but wonder whether I could fabricate a better solution using some other method - seems a shame to replace quite a lot of good system for a fairly minor fault - any thoughts or recommendations would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestions, I've got the proper torx widget, but I'll get the sump as hot as I can and have another go, before I take a more violent option!

Appreciate the advice.
