i believe disabled people can have a car or disability benifit but not both.but more importantly in a country as rich and highly taxed as this one,if my money is going to be spent for me then i am more than happy for it to be spent on genuinely disabled people.you do have a point though about people abusing the system and it makes me angry.it doesnt just take the p155 out of the taxpayer but also the genuinely disabled.i was told by a doctor that the criteria to qualify is that you must be unable to walk more than 300 metres and i personally know 2 people who recieve disability benifits who regularily walk miles

One of my neighbours is class as disabled, whilst he was driving his 17 ton lorry a few years ago he had to swerve to miss a cyclist, as he did he hit the kerb, the steering wheel spun and he broke his thumb...after many months of being assessed he was classed as being 14% disabled as he only had 90% use of his thumb.............he now has a mobility car, his own space and a badge to park where he likes............now you rather tell me where that is fair............rather system is bent. >:( >:( >:( >:(

Something not quite right there, a thumb would not affect mobility, unless there is some other uderlying reason.
It is not the GP who decides mobility benefit, it is a difficult process.
Some conditions qualify, no questions asked sort of thing, as you would expect.
I have a mobility car but if you were to see me you would not say I was disabled, this can make life even harder. I work full time and I do not have a personal parking space, even at work.
I see a lot of abuse of the blue badge, mainly by parents of disabled children who will use this even without the child. They will use the car, without the child and unless they are doing direct business in regard to the child then they should not even use the car.
It is a big issue, so here endeth my 2d.  :)

Mike...i dont disagree with mobility being given to those who need it but i can assure you this chap on my street does not warrant what he gets.he openly brags about what he gets.........my point is that it is abused by a lot of people....who assesses these people

An application is made to a government department. You apply for DLA, disabled living allowance, this looks at a range of entitlement to disability benefits, one of which is mobilty. There is a high and a low rate, only the high rate will get you a car.
The form is very long and complicated and designed to 'trick you' lmho like many forms, information is also gathered from GP and hospital consultants, to confirm diagnosis.
Like everything it is open to abuse, but my main point is that you can not always tell if a person is disabled from looking at them.

Not arguing that one, you know him and if that is all that is wrong then it is shocking, and like many benefits it is such abuse that gives many others the same 'bad name' :)
Incapacity benefit..... well that is another story.........

Have you a disability, does GP agree you have a mobility problem?

If yes I suggest you apply for DLA, you may or may not get it, many people do not first time. If you have a more  recognied disability then get a professional to help you, eg Big 'C' speak with McMillan Nurse who will point you in the right direction.

If you get mobility, it is dead easy need form from local council 2 photo's and £2.00
If not same form just lots more to fill in and they will check with medical people involved, minimum the GP.

If you want to mention anything that you do not want to put on here PM me, to be honest would rather talk on phone, not tonight so PM me for phone number, if you want. :) :) :)

i have a fairly knackered right leg (mispent youth) and have been told by orthopaedic consultant to use it as little as poss. because i will need knee replacement (amongst other things )but  he would rather wait 10 years or so if poss.(im 48).i have to change my job and it would also help if i could park close to shops etc; its not a huge deal tbh compared to many other people,it would just help to an extent.

Talk to your GP and tell him you are going to apply and ask his opinion, if he/she suggests that they wold give a positive report then apply, it costs nothing so what have you got to loose.
Sounds like a genuine case imho.
Good Luck :)

re the LPG conversion idea.  Even with my low mileage of about 7k a year I reckon it will pay for itself in a couple of years.  if there is sufficient interest from this forum I wonder if a bulk deal could be done with a supplier of the kit etc for members here.

This is a good idea, I am defiantly thinking about LPG now but it won't be till next year, got too much stuff to pay for already this year.

I don't know much about LPG apart from its quite expensive, i'm sure there are already threads discussing it on here, but I think it would be a fantastic idea to get some people together that are all looking to get a conversion!  :) And I'm sure we will all benefit from the great advice from members who have already taken the plunge!
