Omega Z22XE won't start after cam sensor swap
« on: 14 July 2012, 16:53:21 »

Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster here. :)

I'm hoping some of you can help me with an issue that's after propping up on my '02 Omega 2.2lt 16v. My car's been having starting issues for some time now and I ran a couple of diagnostic scans on the car. These confirmed that the Cam Position Sensor was faulty. Bought a new genuine sensor from the local main dealer (as I'm aware pattern part sensors give trouble).
I fitted the new sensor today and the car wouldn't start. I refitted the old sensor and the car ran again. Double checked the part numbers and tried again with the new sensor. Same deal...car will turn over but not start. On replacing the original sensor I'm now finding the same issue...car will turn over but not start. There aren't any faults showing up on a diagnostic scan. The battery is flat at this stage from cranking over the engine so I'm going to charge it over night and try again tomorrow. Anyone run into this issue before?

What were the original codes (all of them)? Can you remember?

Did the new sensor come in a GM bag, with the GM hologram on it?

Can't remember off hand though it was definitely the Camshaft Position Sensor...scanned with Torque and Op Com. Previous issue pointed to classic cam sensor faults..ie car was difficult to start sometimes, warning spanner light came on the dash, and car ran rough. Turn the car off and try again and car ran perfectly with no warning lights on the dash.Cheers.:)

New cam sensor is genuine Opel (€120!!) and same part number.

I'm after fitting a spare battery. Same issue, car turns over but won't fire. No fault codes showing. Hardly an immobiliser issue?

Was there a crank sensor code (0335) stored originally, as well as a cam sensor one (0340)

No crank sensor codes showed up, just the cam position sensor. I've discounted an immobiliser problem as there aren't any flashing warning lights on the dash. Thanks for your help btw. :)

This thread has me worried... http://www.vauxhallownersnetwork.co.uk/index.php?threads/omega-not-starting-after-cam-sensor-change.199649/  :(
Would slipped timing show up on diagnostics?

no code would be stored with a sliped timiming but you would hear it it go's Bang. and if not Bang every time you turn engine over it would have a loud ticking sound if it starts on old cam sensor and not new one, i would look at the crank sensor like TB says.

Thanks freecall666. The car ran on the old cam sensor, but it ran rough. Now it doesn't run on either sensor, new or old. The timing marks on the camshaft sprockets appear to be in alignment.

Edit:No banging noise when engine is turning over.

Fuses fine, fresh battery installed, no warning lights on dash, no faults shown in diagnostics.Car won't catch on either cam sensor now, just turns over with no other untoward noises  :-\ ..anyone have any other guesses? The wiring loom for the cam sensor appears intact and in good condition too.

use live data and check that the sensors are working, will work even if engine dose not start, look for inactive 12v etc, dont put your foot on fuel peddle wile doing this, as you will put unburnt fuel in the cat.
would still say its the crank sensor, i allways get a pair of sensors cam and crank. may cost more but save's time, then keep spare in boot just in case. aa and rac dont carry them.

Thanks freecall666, I've a used (and guaranteed working) cam sensor winging it's way to me. I'll have a look and see if I can pick up a crank sensor too. :)

While waiting for the sensors to arrive I'll have a look at the fuel pump and relay's tomorrow. Is the fuel pump for the 2.2 Mig in the fuel tank?
