Although yours leaked where you said, I think the fault if the red seal on the metal shaft, which is supposed to keep water out of vacuum area ('the spaceship')

The hole pointed too with the screw driver is moulded/designed in. So yes your right. If the hole wasn't there the vaume area would fail open and stop operating as the water pressure would hold the valve open.
And if I've worked it out correctly that would give no heat...?

Having just removed the brass shaft from the remains, that seal is a very loose fit around the brass. With the action of the valve opening and closing the seal looks to take all the wear.
The fact that I've suspected a very slight leack for a couple of months and summer inducing alot if ac action in the cabin, all seems to support a gentle leak worsening over time. That lower seal fits the bill nicely.

No idea. but my Cortina & MkI Cavalier just used a heater box & either used the warm air the heater matrix produced or by-passed it, far better than a heater valve that 'old' cars used to have. A HBV seems to be the price we pay for modern auto climate control ............. I wonder what my Merc has

Nice work Chris. 

Unless I'm missing something, it looks like that has to be assembled as two plastic halves heat-welded (or whatever it's called) together around the valve.  So 'unwelding'/cracking anywhere on that vertical seam would be another failure mechanism.  Whole thing looks 'fragile' more than anything, but that perception is probably biased heavily by knowing their reliability record.
