A quick update I've sourced a low mileage engine and the local garage have agreed to fit it and do a cambelt change and keep the costs down for me as it seems they are fans of the car and couldn't bear the idea of it being binned off!

That's excellent News  :y Have they given you any idea on price  ???

We're looking at £500 for labour and £150 for the cambelt kit if needed. The engine was £450 from a place near Doncaster. The garage reckon its worth saving as its in good nick and the new engine has only done 34k.

I agree. Imo the bes course of action would be to try to buy something cheap with a couple of months tax & test as a stop gap,and then take a bit more time to find the best way to get the Omega fixed properly for a reasonable amount.
Its going to end up costing a grand, which is possibly more than the car is worth. :y
The stop gap car could then be sold on,or even weighed in an at least some of the money it cost recouped. ;)

Erm I'm not sure where you buy your engines from but I scoured the country for this one it's not the cheapest but it's very low miles. I've had prices from £340 to £1200 for an engine complete with ancillaries. The price for the new
Cambelt is supply and fit, you must remember I am not a mechanic and do not have anywhere to keep the car. It may not need it doing they are going to check it over when it arrives. It has been a complete nightmare and leaving it stored up was not an option, when I've stored cars before I've found it to be more detrimental to the car as other faults appear. This is the cleanest solution and means I'll have a good car with a good engine when it's completed.

That's pretty much what I paid in total to have an engine fitted in my 2.2 last year.  I can't remember the individual prices, but very similar to you as the total was just under £1100.  The engine had 30k miles and came with a full 12-month guarantee as long as it was professionally fitted and had the belts changed.

As an example,Twiglet sold a 2.2 engine last year which had done less than 40,000 miles.I dont know how much he sold it for but Im sure it would have been less than this chap is paying. Which is why I thought it would be better to buy some time and search for a good engine at a sensible price.
As for £500 for fitting it. I might buy my self an engine hoist, seems like it would pay for itself pretty quickly. A V6 engine would be a bit of a faff to swap, but a four pot shouldnt be more than a days work imo.
The fact that they are quoting £150 for a cambelt kit which costs no more than half that rings alarm bells to me. ;)

Sometimes we all have to decide on a resolution and in this case you've done that. There is sometimes a limit to the time and effort for resolution, cars or otherwise! I really hope the outcome is a good one and that you enjoy your Omega after repair.
