How do you defrost your car?
« on: 21 November 2012, 22:24:30 »

I've never been a fan of de-icer (nasty chemicals!) and prefer a long handled scraper so I don't get cold wet hands!  ::)

Often wondered about those little plug in heaters. Are they any good? Can you get one with a timer, so you don't have to nip out in the cold to turn it on??  :)

I only ever use water from the hot tap.  NEVER use boiling water from the kettle, as there is a risk of cracking the windscreen with the sudden temperature change.

Also wouldn't use scrapers, as they can scratch the glass.  :y

At home, start it, then go back in and have a shower and get ready.

We live in the same, pretty much, crime free village, we think that she had been watched and targeted to steal for spares as they did get 1 door back which is proudly displayed in their place of work... :)

For the diseasalists, fit a webasto heater, either a water one plumbed to the coolant, or a warm air one ducted into the car. Had one on the boat, worked a treat but power hungry if left on for a while :-\

Otherwise, I use cold water. Only problem is if temp is well below freezing, it doesn't take long for a film of ice to reform :-\

Had a Hillman Hunter many moons ago. was in rush grabbed the kettle poured it on the screen. It was  -8 and I didn't realise my dad had just boiled the kettle. Also had a toughed screen not laminated. The bang when it shattered was like a bloody 12 bore going off.

After last winter I noticed a few pockmarks in the clear laquer on the rear of the bonnet.
I`m almost sure de-icer was the cause. Warm water from the tap sounds the best idea.
