possible problem with Bilstein b4
« on: 14 February 2013, 10:05:09 »

This a Bilstein b4 front shock "spring cup" as I call it. The rub line above the chisel shows where its been rubbing on the outboard vertical face of the wheel arch liner. Think I found the hollow clonk as the suspension compresses.  :(  :)

Weak springs/soft shocks/too little camber :-\

Unlikely to be the third one, but how many miles have the struts/springs done?

They where both new, about 18months ago. Set up is as wim.

I need to measure the distance from the outboard edge of the spring cup to the shock shaft and compare with oe.

I suspect the Billy's spring cup is too wide. :-\

That would suggest that they're not exactly compatible with the Irmy/OE springs :-\

Mmmmno, don't think its that, the rim doesn't support the spring, there's a moulded rubber pad shaped to the sping base that supports the springs position.

I think the rim is there if the spring brakes so it can't skew sideways. :-\

Other possible though is that the top mount has collapsed or is faulty.

I'd be surprised though.

IME, that would show through the steering and general handling. Any play in the leg when it's up in the air :-\

A fair few use B4s, so would have thought this would have shown up before?

Unless others do not use the car to its capability...

the suspension only needs to compress an inch for the spring cup to meet the wheel arch liner
