New sky2tb box
« on: 08 September 2013, 12:20:38 »

After cancelling all services with sky after they apparently refused to deal with any of our issues of hopeless broadband and slow HD box, we then reviewed a phone call 3 days later, asking what sky could do to fix our issues ::) and completely contradicted everything we'd been told up to that point about what was possible. ::)

We now have a brand new 2tb box, as title, and I must say the difference in performance is marked. Much quicker, responsive and accurate when fast forwarding or rewinding etc. built in wifi, BUT no rf in or output. So? I hear you ask. Well our system runs on one box for two tv's so sky's ir remote is used via rf to control the box from another room.

Solution? Well partly, is sky+ app for apple devices. Controls the box via wifi network, and its laser quick. It can't turn the box on and off though :( Afaict? But its made me look into the app more and its quite good IMO. Still room for development IMO, but very pleased.

ESP as Mrs G doesn't know how I'm changing channel ;D TV is mine, all miiiine ;D

Broadband and phone is going to Virgin btw.

I put the blame firmly on openreach refusal to fix the line.

Virgin 30gb bb on the way. :)

Sky just get Openreach to fix the line, as do others. No standby button in App yet, good question. I know head of Sky+ iOS development teams well, I'll ask him about this  :y

Got Virgin 30Mb BB at my flat, its quick, router is fine for standard home use. It's signal is poor though, but I've got solid concrete walls in the flat.  :)

I'm guessing sky go and sky+ apps will one day merge into a single app? To give a sling box type experience where you can watch and control your sky box from anywhere via the web. Including watching your on box recordings while abroad, or whatever/where ever?

Can't see them going that route really, what is more likely is "deep linking" you see content on your + app, you request to watch it, prompted to play it on Go App, or on your box at home or record it

I guess there's licensing issues with the sling box type route as well...?

I'm in the process of scaling down my sky. I got fed up paying £80 a month for the odd football match. I rang up on Friday and cancelled both multiroom subscriptions and the HD element of my package. This brought it down to £54. I said that was still too much so she gave me a 9 month discount to cool off, now down to £33 or £53 with broadband and line rental.

As an example of why I did it: last night (Saturday) the telly was so bloody awful that I downloaded a movie and watched that instead. £3.50 for Oblivion with Tom Cruise. It was watchable but I shouldn't have to resort to that if I'm paying big bucks for a tv subscription.

Luckily for us, her work are paying for Bb and phone.

So total bill. £47.50 with sports, movies, HD, and new 2tb box.

...and yes the tv last night was shocking. Good planning on the BBC's front for strictly, they'll get good viewing figures, for the first episode at least. :-\

On demand is taking a hammering currently. 12hd films on the hard drive and only 8% memory used. :)
Love it. But its not cheap, it has to be said.

To add, they gave as 25% off everything to keep us, as 12 year old customers.

Throw the toys out Esta. Cancel cancel cancel. They'll then get in touch to negotiate. ;)

That's what I did, hence the reduction from £80 to £33.

I suppose 2TB is great. Until your box throws a wobbler like mine did last week. Wouldn't play anything so I had to do a system reset, lost everything.
