Ok Dad. :)
I could guide you through the mech removal with eyes shut, but stripping mech, I couldn't do it from memory without one in front of me.

Happy to help here  :y
Oh and no offense intended to Chris with earlier comment, just the terminology (un-word sensored) that made I laugh.

Is there soldering or wiring involved?

Nope.
How urgent is this repair needed?

The (only) one I did, sure I had to solder ribbon in place...  ...that said, I didn't supply the laser.

How bad is it, is it mostly working, so more of an annoyance (like the one in the bullet), or unusable?

Only have issues with my TT in trucks, as it isn't a truck dedicated one so doesn't show weight or height limits :'( a real pita if in unfamiliar territory as signage nowadays is woeful...
a true professional driver uses a sat nav as an aid, input the route and then check on a road map then a street atlas for nearer the delivery point, also knowledge helps and now you have google maps to help as well.

Never had to do any soldering on the ones I've done.

Mine? Only issue. Apart from continually sending the me the wrong way down the m40 from the a43...? ;D

It spits the disc out occasionally. Fine otherwise.

;D Fine if your doing regular runs to regular places. Half the sites I get sent to don't technically exist ::)

Does also help if the signs for bridges etc are maintained ahead of the relevant bridge rather than at the bridge itself...

I generally only use it as an aide de memoir rather than the be all/end all. I don't call it 'The Idiot Box' for nothing ::)
