Diesel MPG?
« on: 04 November 2013, 08:13:26 »

I do around 4-5 k a year and mostly round town so the 2.2 auto isn't making much sense with an average of 23 mpg so I was wondering what a 2.2 dti or 2.5 diesel manual/auto would realistically get ? I was thinking of an old xantia/306/405 run on veg oil but would prefer the comfort of the mig if feasible.

2.5td auto will be really bad around town, remember that any small outlay can take considerable time to get back in fuel savings.

LPG'ing my 2.2, cost around £700, I needed to do just under 10k miles to pay the cost back. Going from an effective 30ish mpg to 50+ mpg.

So if you spend £700 on swapping your car, remember it will take around 2 years before you will start to make any money back  :y

Diesel Omega,I would guess mid thirties around town ? Xantia/306/cavalier/merc 190d etc on veg oil - depends on how you source it. If you get it free,as some people do,then pretty much infinite mpg.If you pay 50p per litre (which is the going rate for good quality oil), then 100mpg (equivalent) is a good estimate.
My Cavalier does 40mpg at 45p per litre. Its been worth its weight in gold to me,but its now very tatty cosmetically,so is going to be replaced by the Merc I bought yesterday.
If the Merc turns out to be a really good reliable example then the Omega will also be going next spring, and I wll save the cost of two lots of tax, ins,MOT etc.

P.S. If your buying a car to run on veg oil, make sure it has a Bosch pump. Other types of pumps usually aren't strong enough to pump veg oil. :y

2.5TD auto will manage about 15-20mpg around town. Awful combination for below national speed limit speeds.

Yup, that's about what my old one used to make.. cripplingly appalling fuel economy from the slush box & straight-6 combination.

Cheers so far, any real world manual 2.2 dti figures? Veg would be sourced at 98p per litre from Makro and slightly diluted by pump diesel.

Veggie oil is £15.99 for 20 litres in Costco at the moment, so that's 80p a litre.  :y

Mid 20's in my TD auto on local runs of 6 miles and return, stopped for some time in between, so engine cold starting each 6 miles. :y

My old 2.5TD Manual Estate would do 33 to 35 MPG in and out of London all day long, and that was with tools, heavy stuff on board and Ladders and Steps on the Roof, same deal on a run around 37 to 42.

If empty on a run 40 to 50 Mpg, would probably have another one if I could find a late 2.5TD Manual Estate with the right spec and colour, very thin line on MPG between a TD and V6 with LPG IMHO.

33 purely locally, 40 spirited cross-country, 44 motorway cruising, 25.5 towing the caravan with 540-litre roof-top box.

Non-chipped with manual 'box, so very pleased! :y :y :y

Granted, but it's easy!   ;)  Straight off the shelf and in the tank, no mess, no faff, no fuss and I'm still saving money!!  :y
