8 bolts and a four post lift and you can drop the engine straight onto the floor ::)

I like that idea better  :y

yes you can do it that way, thats how they are assemblied, and its the recomended GM workshop way, but what happens when you drop the subframe off the car. ???

I've always done it the "over-the-top" way - I just find it easier.

There's no need to remove the bonnet, but I usually do, just in case.

Raise the car slightly. Take the weight with a hoist, undo the wiring/ bolts and use the hoist to lower the engine etc onto a trolley/ pallet and raise the car clear. If you carefully mark the floor and the trolley/pallet, you should be able to refit the subframe exactly where it was :y

In reality though it will be done on a driveway in the rain, just like every other job :D

I usually chop the slam panel out to make things easier, but that may not be such a good idea in this case.  ;D

Removed carefully, the slam panel can be reused, clearly much easier if you can take a grinder to it though :D

my swop question is similar, fitting a 3.2 to a 2.6,
could the 3.2 be used and keep the existing 2.6 gearbox?

Yes in the short term, although if the 2.6 is an auto, then it's probably an AR25, which the 3.2 will eventually destroy :-\

Ideally you need an AR35 from the get go, electronically the same, but stronger internals :y

Same applies if it's a manual... R25/R30 :y

Thanks Al.
Yes its an auto.
It wont get used much so would take a chance on the g/box surviving the new engine.
Anyone breaking a 3.2 and have a good engine available?

Ffs all your doing is an engine and box change. Out with the old in with the new.

unbolt propshaft from gearbox, unplug lectrics, undo and remove downpipes.
remove bonnet, unplug lectrics, unbolt mounts, remove radiator pack, disconnect battery,
then remove, installation is the reverse of removal...
What do you do with the air con compressor ?

When I lifted the engine out of my old 2.5 I made the mistake of believing Haynes when it said I had to get the air con degassed and disconnect the air con hoses.

I was told afterwards that there is enough play in the pipes to allow the compressor to be unbolted and tied to one side >:( (don't know if it is true, I only had the engine out once :-\)

Because an auto 3.2 still knocks the skin of a manual 2.6 pudding. ;) ;D

I suppose I'll never get it.

To me, ticking the "auto please" box also means you'd have ticked the "I don't care how fast it is" box.

BTW Chris - what are your shifts looking like over the next couple of weeks ?

Ooh now Mr 2woody, what was it you said about last time after the drive down. I did feel your pain.

A manual is pita here abouts, as you know. Without adding Edwardian engineering into the driver involvement pack.

If the omega manual was decent and the auto poor, I'd agree. Fully.

The reality is wite the reverse though, sadly.
