poorly son!
« on: 11 June 2008, 12:05:03 »

hi guys.

Question for you all.

My little boy (hes 3) over the last couple of weeks has had a few problems and the have progressivly began to become worse.

I have noticed that his behaviour has changed. (was putting this down to my hubby working away from work but he should be used to it buy now!)
He is constantly complainin hes hungry and thrusty. ( thought this could be a groth spurt but hes not increasing his weight )

He is constantly going to the loo and not just a little bit he pee's lots every time. and buy about lunch time its completely clear. ( thought this might be an infection but hes not complaining that it hurts and his winky is not sore or red in colour)

HE says hes tired all the time too but takes forever to go to sleep (thought this could be all the fresh air hes been getting)

was chatting to several friends last night and they all came out with the same thing.............they reckon he might be type 1 diabetic :'( :'(

i am takin him to the doc today.  Thinkin about what my friends have said i am begining to agree with them. i have to draw the line at him askin for something to drink and eat at 10pm.

Well the question is..... am i reading to much into this or is their another logical explanation to all his symptoms?

(god i hope hes not diabetic, i dont think i could handle it!)

My immediate reaction was Type 1 Diabetes, but it could be many other things as well.

Is there any family history of diabetes?

Diabetes is easily controlled these days, and the health services will be able to advise on how to manage it.  Even if it is diagnosed, it isn't that difficult to live with, so don't get too worried about it.

But take him to the doctor a.s.a.p.

Believe me, these things can be hard to accept, but you just have to deal with it.

I have not long gone down the not accepting there is a problem with our 4 year old.

Docs will be able to advise further, dont wonder, wait for the facts from the doc.

There is no family history from what i am aware.
he has a very good diet he gets all his meals at pre-school and they have to provide a stable diet.

We are off to the doctors at 330pm.

Here's hoping its something else.

Thirsty and tired is a very good indication of diabetes, get him checked out asap.

Hyperthyroidisim would be my guess. But im sure the doc will be on the case. The insomnia you describe is certainly not typical of diabetes, although could indicate any kind of growth hormone/ endocrine disorder.

Let us know how he gets on,and best of luck  :y :)

Sorry to hear this, Marie. I'm sure the little chap will be OK. It's easy to jump to the worst case scenario in times like this as it plays on your mind. I'm sure the chances are it will be something simple but you're right to get him checked out.

Agreed - it will put your mind at rest.

Slightly off topic, but the worst thing you can do is second guess and self diagnose.

I found a couple of lumps in the back of my mouth not long ago, and I almost convinced myself it was cancer. The dentist had a feel and said "it's your structure, they've always been there"! So I felt a right muppet, but he said I did right in getting checked out.

Absolutely, its very easy to draw worst case diagnosis.

As an observation, my three year old is also going toilet and weeing lots, drinking loads and not to keen to go to sleep at night at the moment but then, its hot, hes outside a lot, he doesn't stop running round so hes drinking more and consuming more energy and hence fuel!

He is also always tired but, hes so bloody excitable its no surprise!

My wife's bro was diagnosed with diabetes not much older than your lad, he leads a very active full life, including serious hill walking / climbing, marathon running, emigrated to NZ where he is running one of the country's largest hotels - he also has a family out there.
In the next month he is actually returning to the UK to run a brand new hotel over here.

So not all cases will be the same, but it is not 100% gloom and doom if your son is diagnosed.

In any case I wish you and your son the best

As previously said .. don't try and do the Doc's work ... we all over-diagnose and see the worst when we try and second-guess the medics.

There are numerous reasons, some already given for these symptoms, a blood test will remove most of them.

Another possibility is : Hungry/thirsty/not wanting to sleep could all be missing his dad and wanting more attention from you to compensate, you probably allow the drinks but not constant food, so he pees more .. ?

So nothing physically wrong .. but it could also be what you say ... you just don't know so wait it out and get the expert opinion.

Whatever it is you'll get support and help from OOF'ers once you know, until then .. have a cuppa and TRY to relax a little, your anxiety can affect the little'un - easy to say I know, damned sight harder to do .. :(

We'll all be waiting for your news ... chin up   :y :y :y

That's a brilliant result!  Delighted for you.

I agree with what everyone else says about not diagnosing these things yourself - very dangerous.  But since someone had already mentioned diabetes to you, I was trying to reassure you that, serious as that disease is, it can be managed fairly easily nowadays.

Thankfully, you don't have to wory about that now :)

Glad to hear he's ok as far as diabetes goes. :y Kids often go through "odd" phases when growing up so it could be just that. However, a few more tests to put your mind at rest won't do any harm - only to your pocket when you have to give him more treats!! ::)
