Good afternoon all,

I've just completed a cam belt, water pump and alternator replacement courtesy of the OOF dvd and assistance from several of you more experienced hands out there. One situation remains; each time I try to reconnect the battery, the damn' power sounder goes off. It stays blasting its head off regardless of what I do. The only way to stop it is to disconnect the battery again. It does not seem to matter whether I reconnect the positive first or the negative first, whether the ignition key is in or out. It just keeps on going. I tried the engine and it started OK but the racket continued. I have read a lot in the forum about power sounders and their vagaries but I should say that up to now it has been fine. The main battery has been out of the vehicle for several days so could the internal batteries in the power sounder be flat and if so could this be the cause?? Any ideas welcome - having just spent a couple of arduous days replacing all the bits and rebuilding the front of the engine, I don't wish to be stymied by a ******* alarm!

Leave the power sounder off, and dispose of it. They have a nasty habit of catching fire, so our usual recommendation is to remove it before it does

  remove it and throw it away, I had my elite catch fire due to powersounder,many others on here can tell a similar story

Arm and disarm the alarm from the keyfob and that should sort it

Take it in your hand, run as fast as you can and overarm bowl it into any neighbours garden you don't like! it'll go up at some point, lethal bloody things they are

Ign on and off on Omegas is more likely to silence the alarm

But powersounders should be binned

Technically speaking .... IF you remove the power sounder you "should" inform your insurers as the car is no longer at the "factory spec" of a Thatcham system ...you can't tick the "factory fitted alarm" box anymore as you have modified it.

If the difference in quote is more than 50 notes .. just buy a new power sounder and fit it .. the originals lasted 15 years before giving problems .. so the new ones should last just as long ...(he said hopefully !!!!)

Depending how long they have been sitting in a warehouse though ....

Not really, they only start to decay once power is connected, and you have at least 10 years from that point onwards providing you keep your main battery charged. We`ve learnt a lot about powersounders these last few years, and they are not as problematic as many may make out. They emit warning signs when they are about to go wrong, and if ignored then teh results are spectacular and catestrophic, but if kept maintained, then they will be trouble free.

I can guarantee mine that caught fire exhibited no warning signs in the several years we owned the car
First we heard was a stangled car alarm as the fire started.
Luckily we were home and I caught it before any real damage was done.
