sad if u call that a debate

My thoughts entirely.

I was hoping you could add something more to the party* than a misquote from a shower of shite newspaper.  Obviously my hopes have dwindled and died.

*No, I don't consider this to be a 'party'.  You know what I mean, along with the word 'debate'.
What do you expect from a Guardian reader ::) Going by some other posts elsewhere, he might even work for the BBC :-X

Still another couple of inane ramblings and his car will be in the For Sale section ready to opps off into the ether :D

Interestingly, VAG have for many years written their own ECU core software as it was considered that it gave them an advantage (from the days of Digifarnt which was simply a Motronic setup with VAG firmware).

I am not aware of any other manufacturer that does that, they all use the injection system suppliers core code with parameterised add-ons for the specific power plant,

Interesting. Clearly it did give them an advantage. And a big headache!

Sure they have done wrong and some people will be sacked/maybe sent to prison but am I the only person who thinks that the world has gone mad for justice.
I do feel sorry for anyone whose pension is linked to VW stock.

If their cars were way above everyone elses in terms of Nitrous Dioxide emissions then maybe there is a case but to me they all look similar. That being the case the others are bending the rules too. So lets bring the car industry to its knees with class actions etc.

I bet VW sales rocket as initially stock is discounted. At the end of the day, people buy cars on performance, economy, build quality, comfort and price. I suspect Nitrous Dioxide emissions (assuming the buyer knew cars emitted that) would be very low on a list.

If that happens (the highlighted part) all this will do is hasten the demise of the internal combustion engine and leave us all sitting in self-driving automated electric pods.

I think you are right. Certainly the death of diesel cars. I would imagine in ten years time there will be ahrdly any new ones. Electric car technology is moving on apace. It only needs someone to promote electric cars are recharged using green energy that creates no pollution and the world will get behind them. I believe Boris went to China recently to promote our technolgy to the Chinese e.g. electric double deckers only for them to say have you seen these much more effective. He came back with some to try out.

I can see the frackers won't be too pleased as they are investing presumably with cars continuing to use fossil fuels.

Which is bollix because the energy used to charge the EV is only as green as the stations used to produce it.  This can vary from 0-80% depending on which country you live.  One benefit that is not really pushed hard enough is that the pollution doesn't happen at the tailpipe (and thus in the city where the concentration of people who breath it is higher) this, for me is a huge selling point.  BUt maybe that's because I cycle a lot  :-\

They're not pollution free either, but that's an effect that won't manifest for a long time.

And all the enthusiasts make no mention of the worldwide infrastructure necessary to make electric vehicles a workable replacement for  internal combustion engines.

My view is that EVs will become more commonplace, but they're like 'alternative energy sources': an additional resource rather than a replacement.

my point was slightly tongue in cheek. The public are very gullible. If you showed them a picture of a windmill and an electric car they would see the word Green. I suspect though we are seeing the deathknell of diesels.

I have to say that I for one would not lament the passing of the derv......soot chucker.....oil burner.. call it what you will.

I know some people love diesels but I dislike the way they make their power.

Driving a diesel is like sex without a climax. You get all tuned-on by the growing swell of power  in the midrange............only to find your once proud erection  hanging flaccid as the rev counter reaches 5000 RPM. :D ;D
