whats the best way to diagnose this fault ?

2003 2.2 CDX.
Everything works as it should, BUT once it gets to about 40mph there begins a low booming resonance accompanied by a slight vibration, which continues up to about 55mph and then appears to die away, although due to tyre and wind noise may just be muffled.
The steering wheel does not shake, it does not feel like wheel balance and it does not alter if I take left/right hand bends, if I am accelerating or on the overun, or if it is in neutral.
It does not happen if its parked and the engine is reved up.
So, possibly discounting wheel balance, wheel bearings, engine mounts, how do I go about diagnosing the rest of the moving parts?
What would you do asuming you could not crawl about under a car yourself !

About the only option is to Jack it up on stands and pop it into gear... Not ideal by any stretch... A two post left is a safer bet...

That said, we need to sort your oil change at some point, so could have a look see then ;)

Engine or gearbox mounts ?
Presumably propshaft or diff would cause a noise or similar from a standing start.  :-\

Oil change would be good, whenever you have time.
Maybe you could run it up the road whilst you are at it and see what you think then.

maybe rear wheel balance. cheap option to check anyway. you could even just swap the wheels round, if they are out the steering wheel will then vibrate. 

occurring in neutral as well as in gear indicates it's not an engine or gearbox issue i would think.

Exhaust perhaps?

Are all the mountings present and correct?

Has anyone been to xxx-fit and had a nasty exhaust fitted?
