bp ultimate
« on: 17 August 2008, 20:28:27 »

Now i never used to bother with fuel, cheapest would do.

But for the past 5/6 months i have only put normal BP fuel in, must say noticed a large difference. Its smoother, and under idle its a LOT quieter, smoother pulling though the revs to, but most noticable was the smooth idle.

First time today just tanked up with BP Ultimate, saw it was 1,20p a litre, which was what i paid last time for normal stuff, so thought i would give it a go.

Quick run around the by-pass, first impressions are good, seams to have a bit more low down go, and more top end, 70-90 has a noticable improvement!

Going to rang the beans of it in this tank, see how it goes.

Apparently it's got additives that clean your fuel system. And BP sell it on providing better economy due to the increased octane.

My Scooby used to get a tankful every 3 or 4 fill ups and it used to run and go better on it.

But, back then, I could afford a Scooby and BP Ultimate to put in it...  :'(

In the MV6 its noticibly more potent and better mpg (higher octane I guess).

The extra cost doesn't quite offset the extra mpg though...

Worth it for that factor though, was pleasently suprised at the more bang i got.

Must say did not really notice a difference in cost to fill up.

Maybe worth Forte in a tank with BP Ultimate as well? Really give it a clean out?

My MV6 runs nicer on BP ultimate than on shell Vpower, shame theres no local BP garage.
Don't use it often generally a couple of tanks through after forte!

I have never, ever noticed any difference on performance on any fuels. If it'll burn it, chuck it in ;D

Thing is, I can't see the Omega engine getting any benefit from these fuels out of the box.

The only improvement must be because it's cleaning the system, rather than it's a higher octane fuel...

Its noticibly better on higher octane.  Remember, it will advance timing further with high octane.

And the tractor can only deal with about 3-4 tankfuls of supermarket rubbish before it starts chugging.  A couple of tanks of standard branded fuel brings it back to life...

Yup, knock control will automaticaly adjust the ignition timing to the higher octane therefore producing more go....

I remember this post quite well which I think has some valid points:

Quote
Once you've got a fuel with a sufficient octane rating to allow your engine to run without knock at its' optimum level of ignition advance under all conditions there is no benefit in going any higher. In fact, the additives used to stabilise the fuel might actually reduce its' calorific value giving you less power.

All engines used in Omegas probably achieve this with the best quality 95 RON fuel and certainly with 97/99 (although it would be nice to log what's going with the knock retard, as an indicator of fuel quality if nothing else). If you up the compression the requirement for high octane fuel, and the ability to extract more power from it, increase.

So, this fuel might give the serious tuner the ability to build a more extreme engine (which would then rely on this fuel) but to a standard car it's probably not worth bothering with.
Kevin

I agree supermarket fuel will be poorer quality and best not to run solely on this, but generally i've never been able to notice a worthwhile improvement on higher octane fuels with a miggy :;(

James, in any road engine, 2-3 extra RON will give you more output over standard unleaded.....going much higher than this might not have a major effect though.

I was in my local Parkers parts shop and noticed that they have a product to help boost the Octan by 1-2  and also clean the vales stems. I think it by wynnes just add it to the petrol

Would this help or make any diff if put with some V-power or Bp.

Mark - do you think it'll take a few tanks to notice a difference, or should it pretty much instantly adapt?

ive always found after a few miles it is more powerful.

Esp so on the 2nd tankful when you have really diluted the 'weaker' petrol.

Have always found a difference, but probably not worth the extra cash.

My tendancy is to chuck a tankful of 'super' in as soon as my tank is low as possible after using Forte, more for the cleaning than anything.
