I want a new TV
« on: 02 November 2006, 15:44:23 »

Been impressed with the tech knowledge of all things electrical on here  :y

So heres the challenge - can anyone assist.

for £800 - i want

HD ready 32" or more lcd tv, with freeview. I dont want to go more than this for 32" but would go higher for bigger screen.

Im the sort of person that wont pay retail and wont go to the high street copmet, currys etc. I also need to know i have made a substantial saving  ::) - ie on play.com i notice a samsung that fits the bill for £700 - was £1050 !!

So whats the best model and how do the computer companies fare in this market ( ie dell, tiny, evesham micros ?)

 :y

I was looking on ebuyer yesterday and I seem to remember seeing some pretty good deals on 32" HD ready LCD TV's in your price range. Check it out at ebuyer.com  :y

I am quite taken by this one at the moment:

http://www.digitaldirectuk.com/products_moreinfo3/index.asp?product_id=10713#Scene_1

Awesome picture quality but, as with all flat screen TV's, the audio is a bit flat (there is no depth in the cabinet for decent speakers) so best operated with a surround sound/amp setup.

Ow yes, 37inch and was 1300 quid in currys.....

I personally wouldnt go for one with freeview if it can be avoided.

I use freeview with topuptv and topuptv are just about to bring a new box out that lets you do much the same as sky+ ie watch what you want, when you want.

I wouldn't worry about that, video on demand is just around the corner (saw a great trial of it recently at work and is already used in France) and is likely to give freeview and sky a big run for its money.

Freeview is pretty key though, topuptv dont have enough cloute to ever get there technology fully integrated into a TV and we are only a couple of years away from the analogue switch off....I would say its a must. Plus its not much of (if any) a cost adder anymore.

LG is quite a good make, they make most of the worlds LCD panels (and laser pickups) which are also ised by amny otehr manufacturers

Hitachi do there own and its probably about the best out there at the moment for the money...the HD is just awesome and dam good using the PC input to.

Take note: HD Ready (generally) does not mean the TV is true High Definition. It is just upscaled standard TV (i.e. standard DVD quality as is should be).

If you already knew that then lets continue...

For £999.99 I give you this...

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/100721/rb/22816955047

HD ready, 42 inches of viewing heaven, more inputs than you can shake a stick at. Not true HD unfortunately.

I highly recommend you read the customer reviews on that. That is massive bang for buck - but not knowing Atec as a manufacturer, I cannot say as to what the build quality is like. You may have dead pixels or the interface may be cumbersome, but the reviewers seem to rave about it.

Doesn't come with a digital tuner though, and one customer said they had some very annoying problems with it.

If that's not your cup of tea, then this might be...

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119320/rb/22817177378

Hyundai are one of the better manufacturers and this comes with a digital tuner.

For manufacturer reccomendations, the following I have had good experiences with: LG, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba and begrudgingly, Sony.

Take a look here for a full list of ebuyer's 32"+ LCD's.

LG make a big proportion of the planets LCD panels (and optical pickups) as used by other manufacturers as well as them selves, Toshiba make there own panels and its about the best going at the moment...

...go into your local shop and look at them to see which you fancy, then buy online for the discount.

I did a ton of research before buying it.  It is very nice and a good price.  It is the ONE piece of technology that hasn't annoyed me! (crosses fingers!)  Well, the X-Box itself isn't annoying me, just Halo on super duper level  >:( ;) ;D
