Another one bites the dust...RIP Miggy
« on: 26 February 2009, 10:49:23 »

To try and cut a long story short, I had an accident last week at a set of traffic lights where I hit another car.  Hopefully everything should go in my favour as I had right of way and the third party performed a right turn when they saw a gap in the traffic and clearly didn't expect to see me!

Anyway, it's all going through the insurance and I had the expected letter yesterday saying that it was a "total loss".

So, another Omega bites the dust.  Bit of a shame given that two weeks ago it had been serviced and MOT'd.

Here's some pictures of the damage:

Ouch!

As long as everyone is ok, thats the important thing.

Can always get another tin box on wheels  ;)

Yep, that's the SWMBO said when I spoke to her.  I can replace Miggy, I can't replace me.

Neither myself nor the third party were injured and my airbag didn't trigger either.

The worst bit of it was the stark realisation that I would be without a car, but also without the car that I had lavished seven years of love and attention on.

Well I'm thinking estate this time, but seeing as the latest Omega I could get would be in excess of five years old I'm thinking of something else.

Mondeo.  (Sit back and watch the flame!)

Glad you're alright, but sounds like you might have suffered somewhat with the impact!  You're considering a Mondayno over a Miggy :question :exclamation :question

Oh, yeah.  Kinda knew it from the outset.  I've spoken to the coachworks where the car was recovered to, and they've estimated repairs at over £4k, with parts alone at £2k.  Clearly "uneconomic to repair".

It was only at WIM in July last year for four new boots and the rear track rod end arms to be replaced.  At least I had a good few months of it running straight and true.

What a shame - sounds like a good example and relatively low miles from your sig.

Does the bonnet open? would be intersting to see how the bits have been rearranged.  Its a bit surprising the airbag didn't go off..

I haven't tried the bonnet, but when I had a good look the radiator had been pushed back but possibly not as far back as to hit the engine block.

Not having crashed a car so spectacularly before, I'm quite unsure about what will happen next.  I assume "total loss" is final and even if the third party is found to be 100% at fault their insurer wouldn't pay for the repairs instead of writing off the car.

They'll come out and value it.

Worth noting you can argue that valuation and they'll often increase their offer.

Yep. Throw the offer back at least once or twice and they will normally make a sensible offer to get rid of you. Get hold of plenty of Roger Budden adverts so you can support your claim that it's worth more than their offer. Also reciepts showing the care you've lavished on it won't go amiss.

Time for a 3.2 Elite, find an advert and INSIST.

BTW quite a few spares on yours - try to break it

Claim for inconveniance ect.

Lad at work managed to trade his N reg 1.6 Megane Coupe to a P reg 2.0 when a dippy cow crashed into it outside his house.

1 final thing - is it definately a write off and not bonnet, wing, bumper from a breakers?

Kevin

This is where I should win, as I have kept absolutely everything to do with the car, particularly all the servicing invoices.  They will definitely show how much care I've lavished.  The insurer has actually asked for them, so I'm busy photocopying them at the moment.

I will start another topic once I receive the first settlement offer, although the next time I speak to the insurers I may well ask if the car can be repaired if I'm not found at fault, i.e. the third party insurer is accepting liability.
