speeding - i know its wrong but....
« on: 17 March 2009, 21:01:06 »

Hi All - I think I was well and truly caught bang to rights today - (22 years of driving and not so much as a parking ticket) - I was behind a HGV today on a wide  A-Road, visibility perfect and no side roads, got to a straight bit where you can see a mile ahead and nothing coming - the lorries brake lights come on and he slows from the 56mph I ease off the accelerator and have a peek to see if there's something in front of him but nothing - assume he is slowing to pull into the lay-by about 500 yards away with a burger van in it - so I indicate and accelerate past the lorry and then pull in with no dramas, I get a better look at the burger van now I am closer and it's no burger van - its a speed camera van - DOH!!! I don't know how fast I got up to overtaking but I think it was in excess of the 60mph limit even though I slowed once past the truck - I guess the lorry was trying to warn me by slowing down  :(

Will just wait on the NIP coming through the door now - but just wanted to share my bad day!!

His limit is 40mph on an A road mate, so if he was at 56mph he would have stood on his brakes sharpish to save his own bacon not yours.......

BTW I am a Class 2 HGV driver so know the rules........sadly !!

Bugga.   I went to a mates today, just about to head off into the country side and see's a guy leaning into an Astra from the passenger side wearing a high viz jacket.  As I passed I saw the cop car, then coming towards me I saw the Vosa speed van, so wondering if they were having a clamp down.  On Sunday the same road I saw about 20 superbikes having a "run out" on the same streth.

Maybe they are seeing how they can collect in fines before the end of the financial year. :-/

Even more of a reason to wait. If he was feeling hungry, he'd have been out of your way in 500 yards.  ;)

The way I look at it is that you're better late in this world...than early in the next.  :y

those vans usually target cars/trucks a long way away, unlike fixed speed cameras which are close range, how close where you to the van when you passed it?

A very fair point and well made  ;) but I reasoned it made no sense to slow right down with the truck to pull into the lay-by with traffic approaching from behind that may not have been aware of me slowing and  then being rear-ended, with no oncoming traffic and good visibilty overtaking safely seemed to be the best option at that point .......

Hi Tunnie - I was about 300 yards away when i had pulled back in and realised that the van was a speed camera van - it was white transit type with 1 back door open.  I think he must have a pic of me mouthing a swear word or two lol.  I hope he can't lip read or I may also get prosecuted under section 5 of the public order act.

Reminds me of the time about 15 yrs ago when i was in my Dads Rover 416Si and encountered a wide load going along the A60 south of Nottingham towards Loughborough.

I saw the road was clear ahead so gunned it past, must have been doing 85mph.......

Wasnt until i was well past it that I noticed it had a forward Police escort.....!!!!

Saw the Police cars nose go up as he booted it to catch me up and have never felt so embarrassed in all my life.....

Cost me a heavy verbal warning.........!!!!

Unlucky :(

A fair cop though

I think most of us just have to take em on the chin if / when caught

I suspect most of us could lose a license in an average day if enough traps about  :'(
