What is stress?
« on: 26 April 2010, 16:14:42 »

A friend on here suggested I was suffering from stress yesterday when I saw him, and I always score in the danger level in stress tests  :-[

But what is stress.  I don't feel I'm 'stressed', though not entirely sure what it would feel like anyway  :-/

I would normally shrug this off, telling myself not to be such a girl, but with a history of hereditory heart issues in the family, and being a fat, unhealthy bastard, and to the fact somebody has told me I must be stressed, its kind of playing on my mind  :-/

As I understand it, stress is a feeling of being out of control.  I'm also not sure I have experienced it, but the symptoms can be subtle, rather than feeling constantly anxious.

Take up a sport - you may lose a few pounds, you definately feel better for the exercise and if it is competitive (which it would be!) then you get to vent your frustration out.

Or, having been there, you could just put it down to working for an American outfit!  ;D

I could write paragraphs on this, but I'm not going to. Stress, not to be confused with anxiety, is a silent killer, and we are not always aware that we are stessed. You will probably get all kinds of different viewpoints onhere, but this is a car forum. Book an appointment with your doctor and have a chat.
Don't feel like a wussy talking about it, it is an illness, and the fact that you are concerned is reason enough to do something about it.

Think Dr Pepper, go to the docs, what's the worst that can happen? ;D

Do you sleep ok or do you wake up in the middle of the night worrying about anything?

A little stress is good for us keeps the adrenalin pumping. its when it starts to affect the other parts of life that it becomes a major worry ie lack of sleep, sex drive etc.

So eat healthly, exercise should be ok.

That means registering with a doctor, and seeing as I've only lived here 9yrs, I don't want to rush into such things ;D

I have been a lifelong insomniac. Of course I lay in bed for hours thinking about today and tomorrow....

I'd love to take up sport, but I only play to win.  I don't think I'm fit enough to win, so won't attempt it.  Chicken and egg.

I blame it on that tinpot yankee computer firm I work for ;D

One measurement idea:

Put Sammy in the corner and check the condition of your printer at the end of the day?  ;)

Probably worth keeping an eye on blood pressure. Got sent to the doc by the life insurance muppets on that one a few years back. Doc didn't seem overly worried. Was probably their interrogation technique more than anything else, but made me think I'm perhaps getting to the sort of mileage where it's worth glancing at the gauges every now and then. ::)

I would add like STMO123 says if you are concerned talk to your Dr as stress is probably easier to deal with than full blown depression which I was diagnosed with a couple of years ago.
