Last of Slam Door Trains!
« on: 23 May 2010, 11:47:17 »

Yes finally the very last scheduled service trains using the old SR 'slam door' stock has run between Brockenhurst and Lymington, Hampshire.

Withdrawn from all other services, but retained by South West Trains on this branch line, these trains were the last of the stock that we in the south used to know so fondly in our teens, when travelling up to London for pleasure or work, then finally 35 years later hated for their drafty, battered, and unfriendly condition!

RIP

Set 1497 at Brockenhurst:

on our route the new Trains (Desiro class 44 and 45 built by Siemens)  are far more reliable than the old - particularly like the Air Conditioning. Much better journey for me these days into Waterloo

That's because there's gonna be a whole load of new build trains for the rest of the country - WCML have had Virgin Voyager and Pendolino trains for summat like 6 years now, everyone else has had to make do with refurbed trains.
Take the ECML, I've worked on those Mk3's and 4's a few times, refurb after refurb, and some of them were built in the late 60's.
These new trains will be built by Hitachi - parts sourced in Japan and elsewhere, but put together here in the UK, either at Gascoigne Wood near Sherburn-in-Elmet (Leeds) or somewhere in Wales.
If it does come to Gascoigne Wood, I hope to get work there, as apparently it'll bring over 500 jobs for sumat like 15 years at least. :y

No that is not quite true.

On South Eastern Railways we have had these modern Class 375 trains for about the last five years, replacing the old slam door units.:

On the high speed line in particular we have also the Hitachi Class 395, Javelin, 140 mph 'bullet trains' traveling alongside the Eurostar units.

Certainly lines operated by at least South Western Trains and Chiltern Railways among others have also enjoyed the benefit of brand new stock over the last few years. ;) ;)

On our new stock the air con seems to blow flat out regardless of temperature. The fans are uncomfortably loud but unfortunately not loud enough to drown out the constant recorded messages about remembering not to jump out of the windows (which don't open), etc. >:(

I think I preferred the slam door trains, but then I didn't have to suffer them on a daily basis.

Pretty sure I've worked on Mk3's built at Derby in 1969.
Small works plate at the footstep, but that was 5 years ago now.

Now I think about it, the new trains would be for the ECML.
Not sure, but over 300 carriages, as the old GNER had about that many Mk$ coaches on the ECML that were refurbed at Bombardier, Wakefield (RIP), then again when National Express took over (and consequently cocked it up!).
I think Grand Central had some of that GNER rolling stock too - refurbed at Central Rivers and Loogie barroogie.
