Serious decision required. Advice/thoughts please?
« on: 14 June 2010, 19:49:35 »

Now I know this is something that only SWMBO and I can decide but just interested in other people's opinions/thoughts.

We have a '93 Mini Cooper which has, basically, been off the road for about 8 years. It is supposed to be a project for me and getting a full re-build, trim and spray. Basically I'm just not getting time to do it. I don't really want to do the work outside in the winter but have too little free time in the summer due to other commitments.

I reckon we could get about £800 for it after giving it a quick clean up. If I did the re-build I'll probably spend about £2k/£2500 on it but should be able to get closer to £4500, assuming we can bring ourselves to sell it. Is it worth it?

Secondly, much as we love our caravan we just don't seem to be getting the use from it we intended to. This year it will only get used for a weekend in June and Newent, assuming we can make it! The rest of the year it just sits there ::)

My thought is that we could sell both, get a decent sized Tent for the odd weekend we need it, and use the money to do the garden(s).

I have half done the front at the moment, just waiting for a mini digger and skip to arrive, in about 8 days time, then I'll finish the prep work and then I can get the shingle delivered and finish it. Also got to buy a couple of hundred quids worth of plants now ::)

The back needs a lot more work than I've currently done out the front, which has been back breaking! I'm planning to get a chap in to do the prep work out the back, which will cost a couple of hundred. Then need a new shed before I can get much further... Got plenty to do and really want to try and get it done before next summer. The money isn't a massive issue, a few overtime shifts will pay for the lot, but would be helpful to just sell the 2 and spend it on the garden. :-/ :-/

Like I say, we love the caravan but just don't seem to be getting enough use out of it to justify having it sat there. Plus, if we were to go to Plymouth (for example) for a week the costs are pretty similar for a caravan/hiring a static :-/ :-/

Any sensible thoughts/comments are gratefully received... And no, TB, I'm not interested in a gallon of petrol and some matches! ;D

If you're not using the car or caravan P I would reckon it's time to move them on to generate money (and space) for those other projects - projects that will have a much more tangible  and immediate benefit. :y :y

Sell both, buy a bike - do the garden when you retire. :y ;D
......sounds sensible to me. ;)

if having a car sat there doing nowt or having a nice garden to sit inwith a beer is a decision then the car would be gone,id not be as hasty with the caravan...thr choice of tent or van and van wins everytime

I bet if you asked your other half she is going to say what most women would; sell both mini and caravan and instead when you go away book up at either a nice hotel or a up-market bed & breakfast. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

No way did my ex get away with making me stay in caravans! ::) ::) ::)  Villa's, cottages, hotels or bed & breakfast, but never a van! ::) ::) :D :D :D :D :D ;)

As for a tent.................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Sell the van for deffinate, if you were keeping the cae then fine, but if it's just a project/earner then sell it.

Plough your money into the garden and spend all your spare time enjoying it.  Summers are set to start getting hotter as winters are getting colder (I personally think we are heading back to the weather we experienced in the late 70's)   :y :y

Strangely enough Lizzie, she is in as much of a quandary as I am! The Mini is actually hers and we both love the caravan. :-/ :-/

Think we're swaying towards getting rid of both and using the money on the garden... It would cover both what we've already spent and most of the back garden expenses too.

Should add, her parents, who only live 6 miles away, have a 2 berth motor caravan which we can borrow whenever we like, assuming they aren't using it (about 3 weeks of the year and a few weekends/short breaks) which they will not sell no matter how much we all try and convince them to! I would just spend a couple of hundred quid on a porch awning for it so we could keep our pitch reserved :y

Equally, she loves camping and would be happy in a tent, as long as it was big enough to stand up in :y

Car was a combination of both an earner and a toy... Plan was to do London-Brighton Mini run with a For Sale sign and see if it went :-/ :-/

You've missed out on one of lifes greatest pleasures then Lizzie :o
You can't beat the cosiness, self containment & sheer freedom of a 'van' not to mention the long nights of sheer pleasure being gently rocked by creaking springs  :D (when it's windy!) ;D ;D ;D ;D :y

Well, that is a surprise, but obviously I know she, and you, cannot be alone in loving that type of holiday as it is a multi-million pound business.

Hope you enjoy whatever you decide LD 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) :y

It is the chemical / communal toilets, or smelly, damp shower blocks, along with unwelcome insects I don't like! ::) ::) :D :D ;)

Think long & hard

Minis can now only appreciate as they are getting fewer and fewer, the caravan market is very near a bubble burst, and if you keep the damp out will not fall apart.

Very difficult to call.

Garden plants - why pay for a lot - grow them - what are you after then?

Based on what you have said i would get rid of the caravan and the mini. You hardly use one and the other you don't have time to attend to. Any money you get for these could go to doing up the garden / a holiday treat.
