The reason for speed limits in built up areas.
« on: 01 February 2011, 07:26:59 »

Straight stretch of road near where I live, pretty much a race track .

Houses one side of the road with parked cars, open grassed area on the other.

Little kid comes shooting out between two parked cars on a bike, heading for the grassed area.

Stopped 2" from him, frightened him to death, won't do that in a hurry again.

My speed was about 28/29 mph, majority of the cars using the road normally do 50+, would have wiped him off the face of the earth.

Shook me up.

ABS works though :y

always a heart stopped when something like that happens, I did the same to a cyclist the other day (although knowing where I was drivign I should have predicted he was not gonna stop and pull straight out  :-X ) a blast of the horn nearly got him a 2nd time as he took off out the saddle.

Well done for being alert enough to get the anchors down.

Speed limits only reduce the statistical likelihood of KSIs, never cut them out, and parking may have been a more relevant factor in the situation you experienced.

Some on here may remember the Kwik-Fit Porsche tragedy a couple of weeks back?  I was at a party last Saturday and met two of our friends who were first on scene.  Fortunately they are both highly skilled nurses but they couldn't save the lad.  They did meet the mother though!!! :( :(

Once again.  Well done AA! :y

I wasn't aware of that accident but just did a quick Google.  I hope the driver gets the proverbial book hurled very hard at him.

Even i NEVER drive like a cock in built up housing/shopping areas. Kids run amok & can appear from anywhere. Mums with younger kids & shopping are understandably distracted & teenagers can't see with thier hoodies & can't hear with thier ipods.
Even i condenm those who fly about when they can't see what might happen ahead. Guy.

I have often stated that although I believe in no upper speed limits on motorways, on suburban roads the limit should be 20mph.

I had a similar experience just after I passed my test, but unfortunately there was no chance to take avoiding action.
A young girl (who I knew) came down a hill which was shielded from the road by a tall hedge,on a bike with flat tyres and no brakes and shot straight into the side of my car.I can still hear the thud as her head hit the A pillar, and remember looking in the mirror as she lay in the road convulsing, and then becoming very still and apparently lifeless.
It seemed to take forever for the ambulance to turn up, as I stood helpless among her 3 screaming sisters, but it was probably about 10 minutes. She had a fractured skull, but recovered fully, and the police eventually absolved me from any blame. I didnt have the heart to ask her parents to pay for the damage to my car, but they had let her loose on a dangerous bicycle which had almost caused her death and put me off driving forever and I was a bit peeved that they didnt seem to recognise any responsibility for what happened, and initially their first reaction was to assume that I was to blame.
It was only the fact that their eldest daughter ( who was married to my best mate) said that she saw what happened from the window, and she was certain that I couldnt have done anything to avoid what happened, that prevented me carrying the can for it.

I think some folks think it already is ;) Apparently not the Range Rover who wanted to mate with my rear bumper as I stuck to 30 in the 30s and 40 in the 40s..

Unfortunately down here seems to be populated with people who also believe NSL country roads are 20mph limits.

Oh no, not the dreaded Range Rover.  Believe it or not I was driving at 20 mph at most past a line of very young children being chaperoned along by what appeared to be teachers through Wye, a village down here in Kent.  Stuck right up my backside was A WOMEN driving a Range Rover (my arch enemy!!) getting very impatient at my slow progress! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(  Bloody stupid stuck up cow I shouted! >:( >:( >:( >:(

Makes my blood boil! :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X

I slow down or jam on. Very unsafe but very satisfying.

I was in the MR2 - if I did that there's a very real risk they'd end up quite literally driving straight over me!

I had a huge wagon right up my backside today, so close I could see the engine through the grille mesh. I had just dropped my son at school, kids everywhere in a built-up area.
The wagon belonged to a firm called Hargreaves. I think they are based in Newcastle and deal in scrap metal, I think there is a place in Barnsley that smelts it. They are up and down the A61 in convoy all day and are obviously in a great hurry.

I can feel a plan coming on....... ::)

Hargreaves are a Newcastle based firm but have a large depot on Immingham docks. They run green Scania bulk tippers & carry coal to power stations 24/7.

thousands of years and billions of pounds have been spent making the modern car , from the earliest times we have strived to travel further and faster , guess we must have peaked back in the fifties and sixties because ever since then the bleeding hearts have been trying to slow us down again . In Darwins on the origin of species it suggests that for a species to continue in nature (us included) it must adapt to new dangers and enviroments in order to survive those that do not are doomed to die out and another more suitable species will fill the void that is left  , if you are that stupid that you are going to step out into a space specifically designed for vehicles moving at speed (ANY SPEED) without first taking a quick look around to make sure you are safe then i'm sorry but you deserve to be removed from the gene pool , or at the very least rendered sterile so that you cant produce any more roadkill .
