I had a similar experience just after I passed my test, but unfortunately there was no chance to take avoiding action.
A young girl (who I knew) came down a hill which was shielded from the road by a tall hedge,on a bike with flat tyres and no brakes and shot straight into the side of my car.I can still hear the thud as her head hit the A pillar, and remember looking in the mirror as she lay in the road convulsing, and then becoming very still and apparently lifeless.
It seemed to take forever for the ambulance to turn up, as I stood helpless among her 3 screaming sisters, but it was probably about 10 minutes. She had a fractured skull, but recovered fully, and the police eventually absolved me from any blame. I didnt have the heart to ask her parents to pay for the damage to my car, but they had let her loose on a dangerous bicycle which had almost caused her death and put me off driving forever and I was a bit peeved that they didnt seem to recognise any responsibility for what happened, and initially their first reaction was to assume that I was to blame.
It was only the fact that their eldest daughter ( who was married to my best mate) said that she saw what happened from the window, and she was certain that I couldnt have done anything to avoid what happened, that prevented me carrying the can for it.
