I think forum has changed from when I joined a couple of years ago. Perhaps its just me but when Ive posted for help recently I dont find Im getting replies. i twould be a shame to stop using it as I have found it very useful. What I do find is its nearly always the same things asked before that end up with pages of replies often going completely off topic. Dont want to offend anyone just my opinion.
Noticed similar tbh. Seem to be enough guides for the main issues now so more unusual topics appear to stay at the top longer. If a post gets no reply towards the bottom of the page bump it. IMO. Singularly the most disappointing thing that can happen to newer members on oof It seems to me.
You'd better disguise the bump well ;)
Generally yes and my own, but probably wouldn't bother too much if it's someone else's help question tbh. ( pump )

Jeez, that took a fair bit of reading.

There's a lot of sense spoken in this thread and I'd agree that as the years pass the user base will inevitably expand and become less cliquey (I don't mean that negatively), this means that some old members may move on and often be missed.  And when this new dynamic occurs I think humour can often be misinterpreted.

What I could suggest is either having a jokes thread sticky'd in general discussion, or have a sub forum for jokes.  Either way perhaps make it clear upon entry that that area is completely informal and if easily offended is best to be avoided.

With regard to politics or current affairs such as climate change it's obvious that opinion will always be divided, such is the nature of these topics.  It is a discussion forum after all.

What I think is important is what to do when someone crosses the line.  I'd suggest instead of deleting posts/threads to edit the troublesome post removing the afflicting content and replacing with something along the lines of "Warning.  Posts that insult or are particularly hostile to other members will not be accepted.".  If repeated perhaps a small suspension from posting, increasing accordingly if the message hasn't got through.  This way people will see the thread/posts and know where the line is and will perhaps reduce similar behaviour?  Just my experience of course from primarily one other forum which has an even larger user base.

I really like OOF and find it incredibly useful and friendly, something which I try to reciprocate.  I've been on various meets with different forums in the past and had fun, I'm still quite new here so haven't been able to go to a meet yet.  Although I am a little apprehensive because during all of my previous meets the average age has only been a bit higher than my own, where as on here it must be double  :P

With a small mod team, time is a premium - I'm certainly guilty of taking the quick approach, and deleting threads, rather than spending 30mins sorting out a mess.  TBH, as I get older, my patience with adults acting like 3yr olds is getting less  :-[

I thought as we got older, we got more childlike? ::) ;D ;)

Yep, we do Phil! :y :y :y

What fun it is as well to suddenly find you no longer have to be self conscious, agreeing with everyone, but can suddenly say "NO!" if I want to, walk on top of walls again, and pull funny faces at small children  (no, I am only joking and being childish! 8-) 8-) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;))

That is why I think Steve (STMO) probably is around 80 years of age really!! :P :P :P :P :P :P :D :D :D :D

More like 180 ::) ::) ;D ;D

I have been on this forum long enough to realize there are FOUR schools of thought at work here.......
1) the dedicated car nut who loves his/her car, but has little time for banter of humour

2the person who loves their car, but has NOT had a sense of humour bypass, and takes life a little less seriously than most, giving as good as he/she gets without taking offence

3)the person who needs only advice to keep their car on the road, has little time for others, and does not otherwise contribute anything to the forum

lastly, 4) the person who is light hearted, has a good sense of humour, contributes drivel, good information, and banter, but also really likes their car as well.

As  long as you fit in one of these groups, but are TOLERANT of the others, harmony is prevolent in OOF land.
If you do not, there is disharmony and arguments, with SOMEBODY being offended, and throwing their toys out of their prams.

With over 6k members, there are bound to be some frictions, and differences of opinion, but in all this, we still should be ADULTS, and have ADULT values and sensibilities.

To paraphrase a famous person, without sense and intelligence, we are but just dumb animals. :-X :-X :-X

I personally love this forum, but refrain from posting if it will inflame any argument, or offend anybody, friends are hard to come by, and I've made some good friends, and some great acquiantences, who I hope will soon be friends.

ADMINs.......much respect. :y
