Infaltion at 5%:

Rail commuters are facing ticket rises of about 8% next year.

Energy company Npower is to raise gas prices by 15.7% and electricity prices by 7.2% from 1 October, it has said.

I'm glad that rail fares are going up.  Why should those of us who cannot effectively use public transport have to subsidise those London people who can?

Where is the regulator in all of this.

It is truly barmy allowing the rail companies to RPI plus x percent OR the energy companies to bust inflation by such ENORMOUS amounts.

When it comes to pensioners increases it won't be RPI plus anything.

Other European countries have to get increases signed off by the government and they don't sign off massive increases like those.

Slightly ironical that these pan European energy companies might see the UK market as a cash cow while they are stuck with small increases on the home market........................................

It's not only London commuter services that receive subsidies, TB.

Never said it was - we have a subsidised bus service here, more of which later.

But London is probably the only place in the UK that has a truely usable, albeit expensive to run, public transport system.

To 'tick the box' here, we have a single, subsidised bus service here.  A bus leaves Bicester at 10am on Tuesday morning, comes to Brackley (9 miles), arrives at 11am, immediately leaves, arrives back in Bicester at noon.  Needless to say, its always empty, as there is no way of getting back, unless you wait a week for next Tuesday.

We are a declining state, where all our systems and infrastructure can't be maintained, and we're becoming more irrelevant by the day. This is only one symptom of it. :y

I did that three years ago now . Fitted two 14KW multifuel stoves at either end of the house. I'm surrounded by woodland so I pay the land owners a small sum to cut down a tree and then chop it up myself.  Had LPG stoves prior to that ( Oil CH heating too ) but it became impossible to heat the rooms let alone the house.
Easily the best thing I've ever did. If you are able to install one do it.
