As the Mother of two young children this is very annoying and just shows that the parents of today have no respect for the safety of our children..

As parents we have a duty of care and in this case it appears the parent could not care less

I have to ask....does anyone really give a toss what someone else is doing if it is not affecting them directly?

Let's get real here...

Yes the guy with the Ford sounds like a bit of a knob according to Martin's description.....but equally his son could be sitting on his lap steering the car at 5mph (we haven't had the full details).

Either way (excluding the possible insurance issue), I doubt it affects anybody here.....so why are people bothered to the point where they recommend calling the old bill (who won't do sod all anyway)?

Listen Killersnot!

Regardless of speed a 5 year old should not be steering a car on public roads, you know where other 5 year olds may be playing out in the street/ running out for their ball etc, I dont think emergency stops are taught in reception class >:(

You know what?

If somebody was letting their 5 year old steer the car on a quiet road (and I'll assume these are quiet roads Martin is talking about), then the childs feet won't even be touching the pedals....which means the so called adult has control of whether the car stops & starts (thats the important bit BTW).

Of course if we are talking roads that are outside of a quiet estate, then Martin has a very valid point......trouble is, we haven't had the full story to form an opinion yet!

This sort of thing should be done in an empty field. PERIOD.

Martin is 100% correct

I don't think the full story will change anything for me in this, a driver could not be in full control of the vehicle with a kid on his lap, vision obscured, kids arms and legs flapping about.

It shouldn't happen full stop, quiet road, busy road no matter it's just crazy.

I had both my kids behind the wheel by the time they were 7.

Neither of them could reach the pedals, so the stop & go motion was down to me while they were on my lap.

Their arms & legs weren't "flapping" about in the slightest, and as I was in control of the stopping & starting....we cruised along at a walking pace while they mastered distance & perception.

I'm sure you'll have a PC answer as to why that was dangerous for anyone else to be around us while that was taking place, but tell me what was really dangerous about it.

Don't get me wrong....if Martin's neighbour is hooning (hooning = more than walking pace) around an estate and letting a kid have control during the process...then someone needs to have a word.

However if it's just a case of dad letting the kid steer at very low (and controllable by the father) speeds on a nice quiet road, then I don't see the problem.

As I said - not the first time, and yes children play around there, and often children are cycling along there.

What kind of moron does this on a public road?

It was the main road into an estate where there are a lot of people around. We often cycle along there as well (me and children), there are places for this (ie supermarkets when shut) but not a public road

We're not allowed to hold a mobile phone, take a drink, or eat whilst in control of a motor vehicle (moving)..........so why should it be kind of ok to let a child of this age sit at the wheel, whether in control or not...........it's illegal end of.

I use to sit on my Dads lap & steer his then new 1968 G reg Mk2 Cortina into the driveway & with help reverse it into the garage which in itself is no bad thing but despite "Dad" having control of the pedals this should not happen on a public highway for countless reasons.
Nothing wrong in what he did but where he did it is questionable.

All speeds aside, if the dad is allowing that on what is generally classed as a "main" road, then he needs to be sorted.

It's illegal to do 31mph in an urban area, but I bet you (and everybody else) breaks that law every day of the week.

What nanny says is best isn't always so, trust me on that.
