changing gearbox oil. is it just a matter of emptying the oil from the gearbox & topping up at reservoir. the oil to be removed is blackish, been overheated. :-/

Ideally you would also change the oil filter inside the gearbox. Or give it a good clean if money is an issue.

Remove both gearbox sumps and refit with new gaskets. Top up is fiddly using the oil level check plug on the side of the gearbox (your drivers side)

There is a good how to in the maintenance guides and also discount available via JPAT as a sticky at the top of the page.

Fairy snuff.  So here’s how I plan to do it – if it’s good enough, the scrambled-egg-on-their-hats types might elevate it to a maintenance guide:

1) Grovel in the dirt under the car, curse
2) Undo countless bolts
3) Get full-body ATF shower, cough, splutter, curse
4) Undo filter, get extra ATF shower, cough, splutter, curse some more
5) Assembly is the reverse etc.
6) Refill as per the guide
7) “And you needn’t think you’re coming in here in that state”
“No it won’t help if you take your clothes off”

Have I missed anything?

That is about it!. I use a plastic potting bench tray to catch the oil and any bolts you drop. Tie a piece of rag round your arm and then discard it. Stops oil going down your sleeve etc.

Don't over tighten the sump bolts on re assembly.

Best to do it on a still day as it is a bit like "open heart surgery". Don't want dust getting in!

Have a look back through posts in General help as everyone has their own take on doing the job. e.g. using a pressure sprayer to pump oil in. I use Mrs Varche pouring in through a funnel into a long length of clear pipe while I " Grovel in the dirt under the car, curse", holding the other end in the filler hole next to the hot exhaust cat pipe.

Look on the bright side, when you do the next change in another 80k you will breeze through it!

Yes, get your local mech to do it on a ramp, give him the printed off guide and the parts and watch HIM get covered in atf instead.

...got to be worth an hours labour rate?

Hardest part for me is getting the car level ..... axle stands never seem to "fit" to hold it in the right place ...

This car is now overdue... and I keep putting it off ... tempted to try Chris's idea at a local garage !

yes it is the volvo. the owner drove it back from coventry to york with a leaky rad, topping up countless of times. however he,s lucky the engine is sweet as a nut. no damage. the gearbox oil tho is burnt looking.  i,ve advised him to get it renewed, but i know he wont. balls in his court now. thanks for all posts its 30years since i,ve touched an auto g/box & that happened to be a volvo 164
