I know what you mean, I am thinking of telling swmbo that our joint account is not working, that we should go back to separate accounts and pay equally into a household account....bet she is not keen on that.... ::) ::)

Gave a Superb a good look over in 2004 when I bought my Vectra. I found that there wasn't as much space for the driver as there was in the Vectra (and Omega) but space in the back was good... Phaeton is more tempting for me but not sure what I'll go for when the time comes :-/

Thank God you didn't buy a diesel one. :y

People will still think it's a taxi, but it wont sound like one. Bet it's silver too. ;D

They're quite fussy cars to keep going. use the wrong oil and the cams last 200-250k max then they just stop working. Vacuum pumps on the diesels are also prone to failure. The engines react quite badly to open surgery. Also tend to eat flywheels.

80% of the idiot sheeptaxi drivers in Horsham use Skodas (because the cars are cheap to buy initially). I can only think of one (of about 40 cars) that I would want to buy second hand, and only because the bloke that runs it is compulsive with cleaning and maintaining it, and it's the only one that I know of that hasn't suffered any of the above.

We bought one of a bloke who retired, and fortunately only spent £200 on it before chopping it in against a Vectra. ::)

Only buy a new vw group car, run it for 2 years/60k when the warranty runs out, then bin it. :y

Not a fan ::)

We have a diesel Octavia Estate at work as a general runaround. Its done about 100K on an '05' plate, and has been faultlessly reliable.
Haven't been in a new Superb, but I'm hoping for their fans' sake that the interior has improved markedly - all the dull greyish black plastics, the not very good seats, the lack of somewhere to rest your left arm....
A dynamially OK car with strong mechanicals but poor attention to the niceties that make one fall in love with a car.
Talking general VW group for a minute, would also say that all of them in my experience ride very, very harshly.
Don't think I'd ever be tempted.....

Tony, by "niceties that make you fall in love with a car" I trust you mean little touches?

Ambient lighting for example? "Walk me home" lights?Retracting hooks in the boot to hold carrier bags? Cooled glovebox and front amrest cubbyhole?

My Superb has them all

Hard ride? Don't think so, had a Rover 75 a few years back and the Superb betters that....

Interior in very well built, to VW standard if not even better.

Less room for the driver than an Omega??? I doubt that, the Superb is the most spacious car I have ever owned, including Omegas

Electrical issues? None. It's a VW not a Renault!!!

I don't care that they are used as taxis, shows they can take the abuse and high miles. Most on Autotrdar are 150,000 miles or more, many well over 200,000....

Yes, maybe they are bland, but they are also dependable, extremely comfortable and spacious

Only because they are bought through taxi supply companies for £80+vat per week over 5 years, (£24k for a £15k car) so people are stuck with them, they get serviced to a minimum, and consequently won't last much over 200k. Also those ex cabs are well over priced second hand.

I'd rather buy a 250k mile Omega, At least I'd know what would be wrong with it.

Just because they're built by VW doesn't make them any good, it's just that VW are better blaggers than GM. My brand new VW built SEAT had to be towed to the garage four times in two years, and lost 80% of its' value in that time >:(. My 160k ex police Omega has only had to be recovered once in the same time. :-/

"We pay the VAT" clever marketing or blackmail? You decide :-/

Rant over. :-X

Rant accepted!!

Fair enough, in my own opinion I think they are great motors, and considering what they were making 20 years ago I think they have come a very very long way

Before we bought the Superb last weekend, we looked at all sorts of cars including Lagunas, Omegas, X Types, Vectras and Espaces, however we chose the Skoda cos it was the only car (bar Omega) that I could see myself driving to the family in Poland in

what to replace Omega with - that's a good question...

there's going to come a time when Omegas no longer look modern and finding a decent one will become impossible, but I am really struggling to come up with a viable alternative.

Mercedes - are all automatic as far as I can tell, well all the interesting ones anyway - and a bit too lardy

BMW - says something about you that I'd rather not have said about me.

I flat refuse to even consider anything front-wheel-drive

but what's left ?

Monaro? Bit too thirsty for my pockets, but my sons would love it!

I like the shape of the latest 5 series and it has a nice stance but the dashboard looks vile imho.

I'm just hoping to run my Omega's for a few years yet......

A MK II is quite primitive as far as suspension etc is concerned. Best car of that kind of era IMO is a MK X/420G  :y :y
