There are so many Mondeos around, the prices are low and you should be able to pick a 130bhp for not too much cash!  Boring as heck though!  Is there an exciting diesel?
the tdci mondeos are a bit iffy  a tddi on the other hand pulls like a train  from 1800 rpm when the turbo kicks in  mine has been tweaked a little though but still easily get 50 plus mpg on the motorway  or the st diesel definately far from boring :y

mondy 2.2 diesel is bloody quick :y

Mondy vote +1  :y

I could live with a Mondy. They drive better than Veccies..(what does'nt?) Do you still need a disc cutter to change the front discs? (Not joking) & are clutch changes still an issue? I'd consider a Diesel Focus. I was hoping for something a bit more interesting than a Ford or VX but a bit pricey.

No rush, we'll see what turns up!

Guy, I'd recommend a Volvo S60 D5, they sound good (I mean really good for a diesel), they pull like a train and they have possibly the most comfy seats of any car I've ever had the fortune to be sat in  :y Or another Omega, or an E39 5 series  :y

although I'm no expert for diesels, if I had to buy a diesel, high mileage ones are a definite no no..repairs are costly even in small lumps .. and you pay more at the beginning..

golf diesels worth checking imo..
not quite true my 51 plate mondeo tddi has done 230k and still drives like new

you must have been lucky...don't they have a lot of injector problems and dual mass fly wheel probs...both with a £800 repair bill

I'd consider a mondeo, but would have to be the later TDCI engine, the previous one is a dog imho - too flat to carry the heavy car.  Worth tolerating the injector problems for.  I've seen the earlier, short lived (in Mondeo) diesel screw a flywheel as well, so not entirely sure they are immune.

The 130TDCI won't win any races, but is quick enough and powerful enough not to be frustrating.  I find them comfortable enough that Luton to Leuven (wonder why I went there ::)) wasn't a grind, though I did stand up and walk around in the tunnel.

Guy, have a read of this about the Volvo S60, it's much more interesting that a Mondeo or a Pug 406, all the reviews say how good they are and you could easily get a D5 for sub £3k.

i had a 99 plate passat 1.9 tdi, unbelievable fuel economy. when i sold it with 241k on the clock (i done 200k of those) i was still getting an average of 55/60mpg
very fast for a diesel as well and looks good. :y :y
only real problem i had was the front arms needed replacing twice, but thats a fair bit of mileage they had trundled over. oh, and make sure the timing belt has been changed. :y

The Volly D5 looks good. Also considering the bigger S80/C80? saloon. They do lovely C70 2 door coupe but i think they're only petrol...not sure. I'd love a Passat but not sure i could afford/find a low miler with the punchy engine same as Audi A3/4.

Still got an open mind & in no rush but i love my Vollies & if you get a good'un you can't go far wrong. One of the best cars to crash in as well if things get sticky!!! :y
