I've only ever had to attack the alternator from above. Move the coolant reservoir out of the way and you can get down there. Granted you have to feel your way around a bit, but I can think of worse jobs.
Will be trying that approach on refitting :y

08:15 Windscreen chipped by stone on the A12
12:30 Return to car after finishing job to find crack emanating from stone chip
14:30 Call in at Serek's and he replaces the high and low pressure valves for the aircon and re-gasses it  :y
16:00 Flying piece of metal on the M6 kicked up by car in front launches itself, scrapes bonnet hits wiper blade than smashes bottom of windscreen.

I think you can safely say that I need a new windscreen..  :D

Driven it to work and back... loving the automatic wipers and the Bose... got a slight alternator whistle through the
speakers, (not sure if that's from the aux headunit or the main one :-\), but there's almost no distortion at full volume... tried most things from Enya to Eminem via Scooter, Chicane and Meat Loaf :D

White one is (hopefully) being retrofitted, but black one is a factory Elite, so instead of intermittent on the stalk, it's the auto poisition :y
