Should have kept my mouth shut. Fitted the other donut bush just now. Was a lot easier than the first and in a lot worse condition. The steel sleeve in the centre was completely detached from the rubber.
When I did the other side I did some cleaning up etc. around the various parts at the rear, including the annual ritual of removing surface rust from the  damper, and giving it a coat of paint, as I wanted to preserve the original self levellers.
When I finished fitting the bush today I noticed some oil on the drive at the other side of the car. Had a look and its running down the outer surface of the damper. Havent looked closely yet, but I think its likely that after cleaning it up this time, the metal has got too thin and its sprung a leak. Had to happen some time I suppose.
Shame, because I wanted to retain the self levelling and keep the old girl original, but finding a decent pair without selling my working kidney is probably unlikely.
Might have to order a pair of B4,s or similar.

That said, at least you have plod springs on it, so the handling shouldn't suffer. Also Sachs OE shocks are readily available and arguably a better fit than the B4s. Although you may need to get the top mounts as well...  :y
Yeah, and it's not like you're decrepit or anything. You'll have them on in five minutes  ;D

Ive worked out what happened, I think. When driving the car down off the ramps the o/s ramp shot out from under the wheel so that side had the full weight of the car drop suddenly, which has probably burst the seal. Deffo not from the brakes as I checked that.
Will search for the part number and then trawl the interweb.
Any recommendations for Sachs OE dampers DG ? Had a quick look on ebay earlier but no further up to now.
Rear springs aren't plod btw. They are Sachs standard spec as opposed to Elite spec, so a little stiffer than it came out of the factory.

Yours are slightly cheaper so will go for them unless I can find a decent pair of s/l for sensible money.
Correction, the ones in my link are a lot cheaper, and appear to be the same thing.

Not yet. Still attempting to find a pair of S/L, knowing its likely to be in vain. Will probably order them later today.
If the fittings from S/L shocks don't fit then I presume I need to go to VX and buy fitting kit for standard shocks ?

Sachs ones should include the OE fittings. Bilsteins don't. :y

The ones you linked to had been sold by the time I looked at them...

Says 10 available at the moment ? Ive put a pair in my Ebay basket.
Might post a wanted ad for self levellers on here for 24 hours before ordering a pair of Sachs.

Just ordered a pair. Just under £70 delivered which Im more than happy with. A bit sad that I had to bin the S/L, but I will keep everything in place in case I come across a pair of s/l shocks in the future.
