I know that, but I dont think its strictly necessary. 

I could be worse. The water pump might be driven part time like on SWMBO Citroen C3 ... I believe BMW Minis have the same engine ... that's intended to get the engine to temp sooner rather than later.

Yes, a rather questionable approach, the main stream approach is to have a controllable vane in the pump (a solenoid and 'wastegate') to vary the flow which is much more reliable than  a friction wheel pulley and an electrically variable tensioner!

After recent discussions about oil coolers and coolant changes I decided its time to change the coolant again.
Before doing it I thought I would try and find out why it loses a little coolant over a given period of time.
Looked like there is a slight weep from the bottom of the radiator. 
I was hoping it was the drain tap, but it isnt. Its coming from slightly inboard of that.
Will strip it down to check it isnt coming from somewhere further up, before playing parts darts, but I suspect I need to order a new rad.
Not too shocking, as I think its the original, so its done well.

Head and conrod turned up this morning, conrod fitted just need new rod bolts I suppose. Cleaned the head up and checked valves with brake cleaner, good so don't need to lap valves but it needs a skim (£48). Looks like about £500 to put the motor back together with gasket set, head bolts, seals, water pump, thermostat, timing belt. Also need a clutch kit and slave.

Drove the RRS back from Battle this morning along with the tin tent average fuel consumption 23 MPG not bad at all for a combined weight of 4.5 tons approximately. My mate was getting 28 MPG from his Toyota Rav with a tiny two berth van, certainly worth the extra cost if only for the comfort alone.

Used to tow a Cavalier four berth behind a 3.0 Mk1 Granny many years ago. Lucky if i got double figures.

Got 30mpg from a 24v Carlton with a Toyota glanza turbo on an A frame over 200 miles once 👍

Fixed the reversing camera on the golf....Wire had snapped where it enters a plastic housing, so lots of craft knife scraping, bit of soldering, job done.

Fingers crossed it holds, leaving it a week before I fight the boot trim back on.
