Less than a year ago I fitted a new pair of Halfords H1 dip beam bulbs to my sons Civic.
A couple of days ago he mentioned that the n/s one had stopped working. Found a used one in the shed that worked so fitted that.
This morning he said that one isnt working now either, so fitted another one I had in the shed.
Now all four bulbs (dip and high beam) are on when headlights are switched on.
Switching to main beam changes nothing, and high beam blue tell tale light on the dash doesnt come on.
Dont know where to start to find out why.
Was originally thinking of just fitting four new bulbs, but if theres something else going on, it may blow them in no time and thats almost £50 wasted.
Im not great with electrickery, so any ideas welcomed.

Check the appropriate relay,, also might be the headlight dippy flicky bit on the steering wheel.

Didnt describe it quite right first time so wil have another go.

Switch headlights on and all four bulbs come on (dipped and main beam) but main beam bulbs are noticeably dim.
Switch to mean beam and both n/s bulbs go off completely but o/s main beam becomes brighter as it should be.
All I did to cause this was change the n/s dipped beam bulb.
The one I fitted was an old spare bulb I had in the shed, which isnt very bright and needs swapping for a decent new one, but I can see why that would cause this to happen.
Im flummoxed tbh.  :-\ :(
Have you taken out the old bulb from the shed to see if the lights start behaving properly again?

Spoke to my trusted local garage today and he suggested the majority of these kind of faults are due to fubar headlight switch.
Suggested I replace that, and if it doesnt cure it,  a visit to a local auto electrician will be the answer.
Should pick up replacement switch tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

 ;D :y

There always has been and always will be a certain level of worry / stress/ hassle over my kids, but Ive learnt recently to no let it get to silly levels, unless the reasons are very serious and genuine.
Son had to leave his car in the local garage a couple of weeks ago to have have cambelt / waterpump/ coolant changed.
Until recently I wouldnt have considered any option other than me doing it for him. I told him Im just not up to it at the moment, so he is over £400 poorer, but its only money.
Headlight switch I should be able to manage ok though - I hope.
Watch this space.  ;D

New indicator bulb fitted on drivers door on the RRS , first bulb replacement since I've owned it almost 5 years now ridiculous price for a tiny little bulb.

Might have had a breakthrough with the big American lawn ornament. Need to get the under trays off to find out.

Does it have a column shifter or console mounted? If console mounted you shouldn't need to go under the car to remove it ;)

Realised that the MoT on the proper car runs out at the beginning of April and not the end, so got that booked in next week.

Console. But as Roy walker would say 'its a good guess, but its not right'

I finally found a couple of people who have identical issues to my car. There is a wiring loom that runs between the starter, alternator, glow plug unit and the main positive terminal on the front fuse box. This loom contains three fusible links and can chafe through where it runs under the bell housing, this pops the fusible links and delivers the same issues I am experiencing. I'm cautiously optimistic, but it also depends if any other components were damaged when the issue occurred. As you would imagine the loom is NLA, but a second hand item can be had for about £45.

Need to investigate first and then steel myself for the challenge, by all accounts the loom is a total b!tch to fit.  At least it should be obvious to see if that is the source of the issue...  ::)

Is the loom NLA from Chrysler? Have you tried Mercedes?
