In my old house we were £12 p/wk electric and £7 p/wk gas £19 p/wk. Gas heating and cooker everything else electric.
Moved to new house and it took 7 months to find out our supplier and get 1st bills. For 7 months bills were
Elec - £787 Gas £889 Total- £1676 P/Week £60 P/Month £239 P/Year £2873
We have one extra room, cooker is electric, dishwasher and electric shower. The extra room was not heated, change of cooker would balance between cost. Didn't heat water as no bath, so shower and dishwasher should be offset. Lifestyle and utility usage habits have not changed.
I kept phoning to get them to check the meters. Ended up having to get prepayment meters to repay the debt. I had budgeted for what I expected but I never expected that much.
I applied to the Scottish Gas Energy Trust, recommended by the CAB. They cleared all but £60 of the outstanding debt. I was so appreciative of this as I was having to repay at £25 p/wk on top of the high utility charges.
I have since discovered that our boiler has been faulty since we got here and has not been heating adequately. During the 1st winter we had the boiler on high and still felt cold. So the boiler was burning twice as much gas and producing half the amount of heat. Told the landlord 3 months ago and still waiting for a repair.
Oh well, just made £55 on quidco for switching
