My mum has a 3 phase Leccy boiler - the type where the streetlamps dim when it recharges at night - and has similar leccy bills to me (we heat by gas here)

My parents have an oil fired AGA. Makes the kitchen a bit stuffy this time of year but I can vouch for the quality of puddings and cakes it produces. :y Was staying there at Christmas and one of their neighbours had a crisis - their Aga broke and I went to see if I could bodge it repair it in time to cook Christmas dinner.

That one was electric! Can you imagine how much it costs to keep a hunk of cast iron that size at 200 deg. C day and night using electric power!

Kevin

Oh yes the kitchen was a tad warm......but sunday lunch was excellent  :y

Yeah, I can't understand it myself. I'm no different to anyone else - 2 freezers though.  Probably more IT stuff on - big powerful PC running this place, gigabit switch, 2 routers, wifi etc, but not over the top.

Kitchen appliances - fridge freezer, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, electric cooker and hob.

Just doesn't make sense.

I assume your like most people and have a quarterly bill which in a way is a shame as if you had a prepayment meter (prepayment meter was already installed when we bought out house) you could just unplug say the pc gear or take a £££ reading then use cooker/hob ect and find out exactly whats using so much energy.

Unless of course your with British gas then there's a good chance there just plucking a figure outta the air and hoping you"ll pay it. ;D

Someone really ought to investigate Rupert Murdoch's carbon footprint. His damned set top box takes 20 watts - standby or operating - doesn't matter, 24 hours a day. I presume it's because it stays operating in order to "phone home" during the night. Well, it would if I connected a phone line to it, no doubt.

That's getting on for £1.50 a month alone!

my power bill also £100pm very little gas in the summer though - Gas is the hob, and the (warm air) heating
We only have an immersion heater
leccy shower
leccy oven
Pond and associated bits 24x7
Fish tank and associated bits 24x7
PC 24x7
Washing machine and tumble, used at least once a day
then 2 tv's
and a plethora of 'stuff' on standby etc, which I am about to monitor and improve on, loads of transformers plugged in, doing nowt, all in 4 gangs behind stuff, so a major clearout coming up....

I think we're currently running at 30 odd quid a month. Also 2 fridge/freezers, gas hob, electric oven, all the usual stuff plus an above average collection of geeky gadgets on standby ::)  Computer on 24/7, but much lower power than yours I'd imagine. Couple of other PCs (em.. 3 desktops + 3 laptops @ last count  :-[) on at times. Various routers and hubs.

Generally low energy ligting except in a few rooms. SWMBO seeks out most expensive room to light and sets herself up in there every evening - then leaves the lights on  >:(

House empty weekdays.

I guess if you're running a powerful PC 24/7 that's not insignificant. If it's averaging 200 watts thats £10-£15 PM. Still, that can't be the whole story.

I'd get one of the little monitoring boxes from Maplins and do a bit of detective work..

Order code       L61AQ (frequently on special at 12-14 quid as I say)

In my old house we were £12 p/wk electric and £7 p/wk gas   £19 p/wk. Gas heating and cooker everything else electric.

Moved to new house and it took 7 months to find out our supplier and get 1st bills. For 7 months bills were

Elec - £787   Gas £889    Total- £1676     P/Week £60   P/Month £239   P/Year £2873

We have one extra room, cooker is electric, dishwasher and electric shower.  The extra room was not heated, change of cooker would balance between cost. Didn't heat water as no bath, so shower and dishwasher should be offset. Lifestyle and utility usage habits have not changed.
I kept phoning to get them to check the meters. Ended up having to get prepayment meters to repay the debt. I had budgeted for what I expected but I never expected that much.

I applied to the Scottish Gas Energy Trust, recommended by the CAB. They cleared all but £60 of the outstanding debt. I was so appreciative of this as I was having to repay at £25 p/wk on top of the high utility charges.

I have since discovered that our boiler has been faulty since we got here and has not been heating adequately. During the 1st winter we had the boiler on high and still felt cold. So the boiler was burning twice as much gas and producing half the amount of heat. Told the landlord 3 months ago and still waiting for a repair.

Oh well, just made £55 on quidco for switching :y

I know it don't really help with your excessive consumption, but that money saving expert guy was on the radio today saying now was the best time to compare suppliers and swap if you find one cheaper.
