OH BOLL"&$S
« on: 01 July 2007, 16:05:38 »

Just went to check my oil levels and mayo lots of it and to top it off oil in the water too, but i havnt lost any water,
and it sound like there`s an air leak, but it start on the button and ticks over
at 500 rpm.
Is this just the oil cooler or are the heads going too??

Help!

Is there Mayo on the dipstick??
Smell of exhaust in header tank?
If it's just mayo in coolant, it's likely to be oil cooler.

Its pretty much impossible to get oil into the water via the headgasket on a dry liner engine......so its probably oil cooler....mayo in the filler will be condensation.

When you say oil in the header tank, is it just a small trace on the surface or is it like mayo because oil cooler failure turns it into a mayo!

There`s no mayo on the dipstick, i`ve put my finger in the header and
it is mayo i know the oil cooler has gone but concerned with the mayo
in with the oil as this is the first time i`ve had any there and i only do
short journey`s, would this be a cause for 21 mpg??

Well you need to consider the way the coolant system works.....when running, the engine oil pressure is much greater then the coolant pressure so oil is forced into the water under oil cooler failure scenarios. When the engine is off, the water stays pressurised long after the oil pressure has dropped away...hence some water can get back into the oil.

But, mayo in the filler neck is most likely short journeys.

Mayo in the header tank is oil cooelr failure.

Yes but the car cost £150 then the cam belt went got another for £100 changed the engine
then sold spares for £170 so far  so spending £90 seems a bit rich, i still think i can run
it for peanuts?

In that case I would suggest you trawl the scrapyards.

Its a 50:50 chance that you can remove the securing nuts without stripping the threads......I personaly would go new....

Just because the car was cheap doesn't mean it is not worth spending money on

Very true.

Cars are cheap for a variety of reasons but when you spend money maintaining a car you are paying to have a reliable vehicle you can depend on, not sinking money into something that will never pay you back. I don't understand the attitude of "it only owes me £xxx" when it comes to mainenance. Regardless of whether your car cost you hundreds or thousands in the first place you need to spend a certain amount on servicing and repairs if you want to be able to depend on it, just as you have to spoend money on petrol if you want to drive it. Scrimp on this and you'll have a car that will let you down.

An item like the oil cooler is a common failure and the likelihood is that a part from a scrap car will be well into its' limited life. The amount of work involved in replacing it and cleaning up the mess in the cooling system doesn't warrant risking the possibility of fitting a duff one, or one that will maybe last 6 months and then leak again, in my eyes. Had it been an item that isn't notorious for failing, or one that's a 5 minute job to fix, an item from a scrappie would be worth a punt.

Not so, the oil cooler is only a common failure on poorly maintained cars....i.e. those with poor coolant changes and where the anti freeze mix is not maintained at 50:50 and this happens when people top the cooling system up with water and not a ready mixed anti freeze solution.

If you do go down the second hand route then as said, be aware that you need to ensure that the plate securing nuts remove cleanly as they have a habit of stripping the threads off the oil cooler on removal...

I have a brand new oil cooler. I say brand new, it was brand new and fitted to the project LPG elite. I removed it when I stripped the engine. The nuts are not srtripped and it is new. Let me know if you are interested. Was going to keep just in case, but I have no more planes de-la-Omegas.
