advice please guys
« on: 07 March 2008, 21:02:17 »

right i think i have potentailly 2 problems which i dont know whether they are related or not. thats for you all to decide........

1. have noticed that the temp guage does not rise above 90 unless stuck in traffic and takes a while a few miles to get there.

i have only done short runs with her so i will keep an eye on it when i take her to pick the hubby up tomorrow in london. (its about an hour away down the motorway).

2. burning oil smell. outside car after a run. its not a massive smell ( i still have a cold) but smells worse when i stick my head in the passengers side wheel arch.

have looked inside the engine and i cant see any leaks. there are no spot marks on the ground from where she has been parked. no visible oil level change. the only thing i have done recently is change the oil from15w to 10w. under the advice of James.

Are these to problems related ??? thats if the temp guage is a problem (will confirm this tomorrow)

what should i do???

the 4pots rarely go above 90.

My 2.2 has never gone above 85 in months.

Only time i have got it to 90 is when i have just been blasting it, and come to a dead stop for 5 mins, in really hot summer weather.

Lot of space in the engine bay with the 4 pots, so they stay quite cool  :)

At the risk of sounding boring, as I am always saying this, FACELIFT CARS HAVE DIFFERENT SCALES ON GAUGE!!!

Marie - your does sound a little low, i'd expect 92 - 94 cruising...

I shall also confirm my 2.0 could sit at 85-90 on a steady cruise

and for the burning oil, check cam cover gaskets leaking oil onto exhaust manifold as said

85 is standard operating temp for 2.2... so should imagine its same for the 2.0. Facelift or pre-facelift

Marie - what are the markings on your gauge, I'm guessing 90C and 100C, in which case, 85-90C is too cold.

Running cold is most likely the stat, but could be error with gauge, or the temp sensor.

If only you were nearer, we could have a play and see what the engine temp sensor was reading, and compare to the gauge temp sensor raw reading  :'(
