Tire wear help
« on: 29 August 2008, 10:42:20 »

I have recently noticed my front tires are wearing unevenly. Before I just go get the tracking looked at I thought I'd get some opinions.

Front Near-side = Excessive wear on inner and outer

Front Off-side = Extreme wear on inner only

I am not happy as the tires are not that old, and I think the inner on the front off side is going to go down to the thread before the main part of the tire is anywhere near worn.  :'(

I would of loved to go to WIM but its just too far away just for that. Do you think I should just go get it tracked or find somewhere near me that does full geometry etc.

Thanks in advance.

Its not tracking thats an issue....its the camber as its this taht causes extreme localised wear such as you have.

Also check the steering idler given the wear variance on the passenger side.

So do you think I need to find somewhere that does full geometry like WIM, and what is the steering idler?

Yes but, more importantly, you need to get them to set the camber (dont get fobbed off) to about -1.20

The idler arm is mounted on the passenger side inner wing and connects to the steering rod. With the passenger side jacked up grab the road wheel at the 3 and 9 Oclock posiion and wigle it whilst watching the idler arm..........there should be no vertical movement.

Cheers, If anyone knows a place to recommend in the west yorkshire area that would be great.

There is something else I have just remembered, and that is when you grab the off side wheel when on the ground, and rock it (pull) there is a knocking sound, I assumed it would be a bush of some sort but I am just not sure if it is related to the tire wear. I will be getting the knock looked at but the mechanic I use is on holiday atm.

Investigate the noise, it may be related to odd wear.

Inside extreme shoulder wear common on Omegas due to the way the camber adjusts over time.  A full geometry check is highly recommended.  Might be worth PM'ing wheels-inmotion to see if he is able to recommend somewhere up north...

Have you checked the pressure, wear on inner and outer often occurs with underinflation, hope it is that simple for you

If its the shoulders, it would have to be extreme for it to be pressure related - so extreme, even my mum would notice ;D

Pressure is checked regularly so shouldn't be that. wish it was that simple

Quite True!!

I'm very glad I made the effort and 200 mile each way trip!

Ljays car was transformed by the geometry and new tyres (VERY competitive tyre prices)

I will be taking mine down soon, very nearly at the rear wear indicators, goes sideways just a little too easily now  ;D
(plus a bloody great nail in an irrepairable place (how it keeps pressure I do not know))

Deffo before the Winter sets in!

Maybe it would be worth getting a few names together for a mini meet type thing in the near future, all depends if I can find somewhere up north that can do the job to the same standard

one side "may" be running low pressure but the other def. needs mechanical attention, but its wise to change suspension parts in pairs.  Most run 30 to 32psi or as the guide on here.To me, and as the knowledge day at wim more importantly, its worth checking the wishbone bushes springs and idler as said, as play and subsequent replacement of any of these will affect the geometry set up accuracy, and possibly leave you back at square one.
Hopefully its just natural settlement of the car as springs and bushes wear in but chances are you will need to replace the wishbone bushes.
So suggest, speak to wim and get the idea/ importance of it all.
See a mech(or diy), check idler and wishbone bushes for play, and thoroughly check springs for breakages. Then book in for a full geometry set up with an  experienced operator who knows the mig settings.  Worth a search on all of the above on here as its all been well covered. Hope helps.
