I read one (government I think) report suggesting that the motorway speed limit could be 100, and people would carry on driving at the speeds they do today.

must admit, at one point, I did hit 110 on the way to Liverpool yeaterday :-[

NEVER, I stick to all speed limits, i have had first hand experiance on what speed does, IT KILLS.

No it doesn’t! Stopping does! (No seriously) when speed limits were decided cars ran drum brakes and road surfaces were rubbish. To stop a car from 70 quickly wasn’t an easy job, now even the most incompetent driver in a semi modern car can stop allot quicker than what the Highway Code says.

tbh i don’t really bother with speed limit's, i drive within my limit, which unlike a sign, change very regularly depending on traffic, conditions etc. im not saying i drive everywhere at full throttle, but there’s a 2 mile dual carriage way near my house which goes between 2 industrial estates, its signposted as a 30mph, now fair enough during the day it is quite busy with truck etc, but after business hours its dead! There’s a road at either side with no access to the main road and a grass verge in-between so if anything was coming towards the road for either direction you could see it with enough time to take action. On that road you can very safely drive at 60mph with no problem. Now on the same par, if im driving past a school ill sit at 20mph or lower.

If the government want more people to pay attention to speed limits, they need to make them more realistic!

Speed isn't dangerous...inappropriate speed is. Doing 70mph on the motorway is perfectly safe in general, but doing 70mph down by your local chippy…that’s inappropriate and dangerous.

now my tuppence worth............................

speed does kill yes, nearly a year ago on the ring road at horsforth and rodley leeds i was going to my parents house when a biker decided that he was going to do over 100mph with no lights on on the wrong side of the road. when he was at the side of my car he was skidding doing 100mph at the side of my car. i looked in my mirror and he ploughed into the back of a police boss's car that was being driven by a recovery guy. now i'm also a biker so i handbraked my car in the middle of the car and ran up to help.

i was the second person on site to help. the guys helmet had disintegrated and he was wrapped around a road sign. me and the paramedic tried giving cpr but to no avail. the guy died at te side of the road. all i coould see for months when i closed my eyes was the gash in the guys head!!!!!!!! i had to go stop traffic at the top of the road to help preserve the scene!!!!! now i have first had experience that speed kills!!!!

I know what i am talking about also as my experience was a loved one, speed does kill when it is being done in the wrong place, no one will tell me different. Speed limits are there for a reason, and people who do what they want need to think, what would they go through if one of their loved ones were to be killed by idiots. it would deffinatley change their outlook.

Just heard it on my wind-up radio. Doing 45 or over in a 30 limit, 6 points and £100 fine.

Quite right!

I'd shoot the b*stards. >:(

Are you serious? Or is it  a wind up?  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Personally I think more about the standard of driving more than number on stick obediance.

I wind some people up by keeong my speed low in built up areas, then booting when safe.

When you see fast roads deliberately speed limited when there are no juctions and good sightlines I can see no reason to obey unrealistic limits.

As to dropping towns to 20, well most are fine at 30 and if you start micro managing too much people will just get peed off.

People treat limits as targets, this is why I personaly do not like them.

Quite often I will drop to 15 in 30s if that is the safe speed yet according to the safety nazis I am allowed to do 30, my road is not safe over 20 yet it is a 30!!!

Same as my MILs, but I ignore my parents 8mph limit and do 15 as I have always done - even on a pedal bike when small

You could remove all speed limits from all roads. The people who drive safely now would continue to do so. The idiots would continue to wreak havoc.

Problem is, speed is easy and cheap to enforce so all traffic enforcement seems to have come down to a numbers game.

I agree that the current speed limits are largely reasonable and there's no need to exceed them, especially in urban areas. However, if other driving skills such as hazard perception continue to be neglected by the gross simplification that is slogans such as "speed kills" speed limits will have to be set on the assumption that hazards are always there - because the average driver won't be spotting hazards.

That will criminalise drivers who want to "press on" a little when conditions make it safe to do so. It's starting to happen now. Rural roads around me that used to be national speed limit are dropping to 50 or 40 simply because there are a few bends (which can be taken safely at the national speed limit), double white lines are appearing where overtaking used to be perfectly safe if undertaken carefully and so on.
