What Trolley Jack
« on: 18 July 2009, 22:02:30 »

Hi Guys

Could someone give me a little advice please.

I'm looking at investing in a Trolley Jack.

My problem is what what weight to allow for?

In the owners book it says the Kerb weight of a 2.2 DTI Estate is 1694 kg which is under 2 Tonne
But the gross weight is 2265 kg which is about 2.25 Tonne or 2.5 Ton.

Most of the jacks I have looked at are either 2 or 3 tonne. There is usually a big differance in price to.

I'm sure the answer is simple, but I want to be sure.

Which do you guys use? :-/

I use a Halfords 2 ton jack as well, as you will never lift the whole of the car up on one jack!  In other words the most you will lift is half the car weight, 1 and a bit ton at MOST ;) ;)

You should automatically use axle stands to support any already lifted part of the car in anycase. ;) ;)

What is usefull though, if you can afford it, are high lift trolley jacks ;) ;)

I have this one http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j

Had it for about five years. Lifted Mig's, Pajero's and many more. Still working well. As said don't forget axle stands :y :y

Cheers for your help guys and girls :y

Looks like that 3 ton jack is about £86

Bit more than I was thinking of paying, but at least I know the 2 ton will lift it.

I'll put me thinking cap on ::)

Of course I will use stands, bits of sleepers and wheels underneath to be sure :y

Don't want to be squished :o

It might be a little pricier that others but it will perform and it will last  :y

I have not used it yet as i haven't bought any axle stands and other bits yet, but i will say it is of a solid and heavy construction

That looks almost identical to the Machine Mart one.

at half the price.

Wonder if they still have any left.

I'll call them Monday :y

Please note the code of the item as listed at the end of the second link (JM3024). Don't confuse with other higher rated jacks on his site which look more feeble and weigh less

Get a three tonne, it copes much better.

I have the clarke one like TB, it is excellent

Read this too :

DO NOT USE argos stands......

A member here had one collapse, could have been fatal!

another vote for the piccy above  :y

one 1st sight, I though way too big for me, so I bought a smaller one....

which soon pee'd me off, so bought the bigger one above.

So should have done it in the 1st place and saved some money  :y

even better if you wait for a vat free invite (register for a catalogue on their site if you dont get them)  :y

"What Trolley Jack".......now, that`s a really niche publication! ;D

I`d go for the 3 tonne (shown in pic. by Tonkapaj); it would seem to be wider and more stable; not to mention better built than any Halfraud offering......I like the handle-rotate release valve too. :y

Thanks for all your advice, much appreciated. :y

I must admit the Mach Mart 3 ton looks a good bit of kit.

But what do you think of the one Radar suggested? Looks to me like the same animal, but badged up different? :-/
