no eml light is on . only warning i get is on dash saying automatic gearbox !!!!!!!!

I doubt the RAC will jack the car up to level and check the ATF level for you   probably just tow you to a Vx dealer, especially as the warning is on the dash.

Checking the ATF is NOT a difficult job technically .. it's a tad awkward, but if you've been able to get to the filler already you should have no problem getting some oil back in !!!

It might not be low oil .... but for the sake of a few quids worth of ATF it has to be the first thing to check !!!!

just remember .. if it was low  when he drove it in .. it's even lower now you've let a whole load out !!!

I dont know if you are aware but the ATF has to be checked when the gearbox is warm and with the engine running as Entwood said  ..... doesnt seem clear to me if the OP done it with engine running when reading through this post  :-/

well as i brought the car with it not moving i only left it running for 15 min stand still, not being able to move it!!!

call rac in min to get there advice and see wat they say when it there in flesh.

Can't believe you did not try it to see if it moved before you bid on it!
Just a thought but I suppose you have checked to see if there is any output from the gearbox while it is in drive? After all, it may be that the prop or diff has blown it, not the gearbox, auto or otherwise!
If it is the gearbox I would not pay more than 50 smackers for a second user one either. They are very common among loads of medium, up to 2.0 lt sized motors, certainly not a rarity. Sholud not cost more than 150 for the job in total, even paying someone to do it.

I'd be inclined to step back a bit before buying a new box. 

If we work on the basis that it was driven to the aution house then "something" must have happened there. 

chances are that it is an electrical/selector problem as much as a problem with the box.

My suggestion would be

1) get the fault codes ready by someone who knows what they are doing

2) focus on what the fault code is telling you

There is a chance that you could replace the box with a pretty knackered one and all the time it is a selector problem - and your new box will not work either.

where abouts are you, perhaps there is someone near you to help

oh  and a really daft question - does the car move at all?  If it has been standing in the current weather then the handbrake shows and even brake pads can corrode onto the discs/drums.  It can take a bit of freeing.  Its obvious with a manual but no so with auto

ok the way the weather has been the auction grounds was a sheet of ice so my luck they walked round to do the selling with just the cars running not driving, thats why i bidded as i obviously thought it was drivable.. and john h i live in south london near dartford bridge,, i looked loads of places and all seem around 130 to 190     you say about reading the codes! how is that done?

yes as long as the auto ecu is working.

yes they would but as found my self with RAC there's somtimes dont pick up a signal or get wrong fault code, and they are worth there weight in gold, and it is a good price.
