2.2 CD Auto - Couple of problems
« on: 04 October 2010, 14:04:35 »

Hi all

I have just posted this in the newbies forum, so sorry if some have already read it!

I'm Matt, 28 from Altrincham.

I have recently taken ownership (free) of a Y reg Vauhall Omega 2.2 CD Auto.

To cut a long story short, a women my dad was working for was leaving the country and just wanted to get rid of the omega as she didnt have time to sell etc etc.

The car is black, has 7 months mot (didnt come with tax, but i have just put 6months on) and is currently reading 127k on the clock.

I havent got much history on the car, but it stands me for nothing so i'm not too worried.

Condition wise, its a belter.  Only a few scuffs and the interior needs a little clean but in all i'm very happy.

We've had to replace the battery and it had a water leak which was tracked down to one of the heater valves.

Running wise, it seems ok but not 100%.  I have a quick look on the forum but maybe some will be able to advise??

Cold start - Not the best.  It genrally starts ok with a little throttle, but can sound a bit rough and the idle isnt the best.  After 2 mins of so, it runs fine.  I'm guessing some of the sensors might need a clean (which ones, and where can I find them?)

Gearbox - Seems to go in limp mode.  Not whilst driving, just which I first start it on a morning.  I dont get any warning lights but I can tell its in this state because I cannot select sport mode.  To fix this (and it works without fail) I simply turn the engine off, and back on then its back in business (quick test that I can engadge sport mode)

Drivers seat - The switch seems broken and I cannot operate it.  Although its likely to be the switch, could it be anything else?  I'm pretty sure the heating doesnt work on this seat either?

Interior Boot release - This doesnt work, although it works fine on the fob!

Sorry for all the questions!  Just thought I'd get them in now as I guess most newbies do!

Thanks

Matt

Boot release in the car needs for the key to be out of ignition and hold in the button on the dash for a couple of seconds. WILL NOT work with key in ignition.

If you in altrincham i would suggest getting the car over to Elite Pete in Northwich for a thorough service and to sort out any little niggles he does anything i can't do myself on mine and he's getting pretty good at omega's (only joking pete). Seroiuosly Matt you can't go wromg with him and have a look through the how too's :y

Cold starting and limp mode suggest the cam sensor.

Only replace it with a genuine one from a Vx dealer, do NOT buy one from a motor factor.

The seat switch, have a look in the Maintenance Guides, it will tell you how to service it.

Boot, have you checked the fuses?

Thanks for the suggestions and links all.

So where abouts is the cam sensor, how easy is it to replace and how much from vauxhall does one cost?

Cheers

Cam sensor change on a 2.2
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1269023974

About £60 from a vauxhall dealer which means going into the dealership not buying an alledged snide one of the bay that some claims is genuine.

If you've no history on the car might be worth doing the cambelt and waterpump while your down there :y

Cheers mate, although I dont have permissions to view that link.

I dont trust the bay, so will get one from vauxhall.

So is this a common issue then, and one that definately suggests the cam sensor?

Thanks

Try the link in my post again Matt not sure what i did last time ok now.

Yes cam sensor isn't unusual to go and easy enough to fix, but as i said earlier if you've no history please get the cambelt and water pump done beacause if these go its bye bye engine :'(

Cheers guys

Yeah, i'm trying to retreive as much history from it as I can but the previous owner was a tad dizzy if you catch my drift, and lost all paper work for it.  This included the logbook, which I had to contact the DVLA for!

I've always been careful with regards to cambelts on my previous cars.  How much are we talking on an omega?

I always thought these 2.2 engines were on a timing chain rather than belt......how wrong I was! ;D

Cheers

2.2 Diesel is a chain
2.2 Petrol is a belt

Make sure you do the full kit and the water pump(cambelt driven) interval is every 40000.

Buypartsbuy is ok for the parts failing that stick to contitech or gates.

Price depends on whether or not your self fitting :y

Ah ok cool, I just thought because a friend of mine had a vx220 with the 2.2 engine in and I could have sworn he said it was a chain rather than belt.

Is this the part i'd be looking at?
