Are you sure they are charging you £40 to replace a rear wheel bearing .

To do the job its about 3-4 hours and thats assming the bearing presses in and out without much grief.

They are working for less that £12=00 an hour...let me know if they do a good job and price charged is correct.

They will not be short of future customers ,assuming they are still in business !!!

Hi,
Something doesn't sound right to me on this. Being of a suspicious nature of course.

Before I set out to do mine, I went to Vx main dealer to get price,
was told that did I really wish to know, as it would be more than the car was worth, and recommended to try a garage that specialised in Vx but not dealer, and gave me details. They quoted me £250.00 + part cost.

Tried very local garage all makes, he wouldn't touch it, as he put it, with a barge pole. Suggested another local back alley feller that as soon as I met him I made up my mind that whatever he quoted I wasn't going to take it.
Tried another garage recommended to me, they quoted £350.00 at least.

If you can get it done for that price then by all means go for it, but keep eyes wide open. The saying about peanuts and monkeys springs to mind.

Having done my own in the end and knowing whats involved something seems wrong here.

In a garage with all the most up to date lifting gear, and simply every one of the Vx special tools listed as needed to do the job with no problem, and a couple of persons, it would be a couple of hours work.

From what I can tell, there is a fear of Omegas as nothing but hassle.
But this job is more about having all the gear to do it, than the actual difficulty. Its only much the same as a normal FWD car bearing change job.

The price quoted does imply they don't have a clue tbh.

Plus, it has been suggested in the past that it's easier to change the whole trailing arm for a known good one.

Fair play to him then.

Let us know when the job is done and his details as am sure he will have plenty more heading his way at that price.

I have rear wheel bearing that's been rumbling for a little while and I will need to replace i at some stage.
I have looked around for a few prices and the Vx main dealer was £50 for the bearing only. I can't remember their price to ft it, but they were the highest in the region of £350 and the lowest was about £170 all in.
I was going to tackle it myself, but I'm a bit concerned about the recommendation on this thread to put it into a garage to do the job.
Is it that difficult? Haynes manual does give it a 4 out of 5 spanner rating, so fairly hard but not the most difficult job. Special tools mentioned are Torque wrench and bearing puller. I've changed wheel bearings on other cars before but not the Omega.
Any recommendations from those that have done it?
